A simple proposition – give one bonus point for each lap a driver leads. If a man leads 150 laps at Daytona, he gets 150 bonus points, for example.
Or perhaps, considering tracks are different lengths, give one bonus point for each mile a driver leads.
Mike contends, and I agree, that putting all of that value on leading laps would make for much more competitive racing for the lead. More lead passes - more exciting races.

well i only watch NASCAR to see the crashes. i believe i am in the majority. what fun is watching a race normally decided in the last lap?
but as far as F1 is concerned-- God i am sick of watching the first 3 qualifiers parade around and end up as the first 3 finishers.
Here is my proposal. This was how my early racing experience did it. (Midget racing in so cal).
You rund short qualifying RACES. Starting grid decided by lottery.
Then you take the top say, 5 finishers in each of say, 4 qualifiers,
and start them in a main event. IN REVERSE ORDER!! Fastest cars start last, requiring them to actuallyPASS SOMEONE. Every Pit stop would be a REQUIRED time. no 3.2 sec replace everything crap. Races should be won on the course, not in the pits.
Next--do away with electronic monitoring during the race. If the driver can't tell his rear tire is going flat, he shouldn't be driving.
Make the driver actually change gears manually.
finally make the damned cars pretty! these monsters are just plain ugly. (see "Grand Prix" the movie).
in other words lets make the driver more important than Mr. Ferrari's money.
