The life of a professional footballer may look quite easy, but to their credit, they work long seasons under intense pressure, and get just a few weeks a year in which they can unwind and shirk their fastidious fitness routines.

As most major sides have started their pre-season preparations and many of the World Cup's brightest stars head back to their employers, it's time to look back at 10 footballers who used their wealth and celebrity to have a much better summer holiday than you did...

Mario Balotelli

Super Mario has been getting over a pretty unremarkable World Cup campaign by taking his fiancee Fanny Neguesha to see the sights in the United States. After spending a few days playing in the surf on Miami Beach, Fanny and Mario headed north to New York City, where he climbed the Empire State Building and attempted to play golf with a football. As you do.

Despite speculation of a move back to the Premier League, Balotelli is expected to stay in North America to meet up with Milan when they play a friendly in Toronto on Sunday.

John Terry

John Terry's glorious return to Instagram back in June was marked by some idyllic shots of his family holiday in Greece.

Since then, the Chelsea star has also shown us his golf games with boy-band members, his banal running statistics and some slightly strange training drills. He's also let us know that he'll be enjoying a book by Harry "I can't read or write" Redknapp on his travels to Austria with the Blues.

It's been the summer of JT!

Kevin-Prince Boateng

Aside from playing his part in Ghana's disastrous World Cup campaign and getting himself sent home early, Kevin-Prince Boateng appears to have spent much of his summer frolicking on various beaches with his significant other Melissa Satta—the lady who once gave him a sex injury.

Before the tournament, KPB and Melissa went on an extended tour of Spain and the Balearic Islands, at one point boarding a yacht with Nigel De Jong

Upon his return from Brazil, the Schalke star hit the high seas once again, taking a boat around Sardinia

Joey Barton

As the self-appointed voice piece for the western world, Joey Barton has an obligation to keep his followers entertained with his antics. The controversial Queens Park Rangers midfielder wore a very interesting outfit when he attended the Glastonbury Festival in June and then headed out to Brazil to see some games.

Barton has also been spending his time productively by taking a UEFA A licence course, which means we might just see him as a manager one day. Just imagine the post-match press conferences...

Steven Gerrard

Almost as soon as England's plane touched down at Luton airport, Steven Gerrard put his family on another one headed for the beach.

The Liverpool captain has been in Ibiza for a few weeks, which is something he will have a lot more time to do in future summers after drawing the curtain on his national team career.

Bacary Sagna

In the space between returning home from the World Cup and reporting for pre-season training with his new club Manchester City, Bacary Sagna has squeezed in plenty of international travel.

This summer, it seems that the majority of footballers have either travelled to Ibiza, Sardinia or Miami. The French right-back has managed two out of three, heading to the Mediterranean island with his wife Ludivine last week and sunning himself in Florida this week

It's a tough life when you earn six figures a week.

Jack Wilshere

Following England's elimination from the World Cup, Arsenal star Jack Wilshere had a lot of fun in Las Vegas—perhaps too much fun.

While at a poolside party with Joe Hart and James "don't call me boring" Milner, the midfielder was pictured having alcohol poured into his mouth and puffing on a cigarette

Usually what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but in this instance, Wilshere will have Arsene Wenger to answer to after being caught smoking for the second time.

Daniel Sturridge

England's early exit from the World Cup gave Daniel Sturridge some extra time to earn some air miles. During the knockout rounds, the 24-year-old took in some knockouts of a different kind when he attended a UFC fight in Las Vegas.

From there, the Liverpool star went to relax with his family in Jamaica—where he set up a foundation last summer. While there, he discovered he has table tennis in his blood and he was photobombed by an old lady by the pool.

Mario Gotze

If anyone deserves to party on a private yacht with a lingerie model, it's probably the man who scored the winning goal in the World Cup Final.

Since returning from Brazil, Mario Gotze and his partner Ann-Kathrin Broemmel have been living it up on the high seas of Ibiza with a few friends.

Fortunately, the Bayern Munich man doesn't appear to have had any of the "wardrobe malfunctions" he suffered the last time he and Ann-Kathrin boarded a yacht.

Samir Nasri

Samir Nasri was controversially dropped from Didier Deschamps' France squad for the World Cup, leading his girlfriend Anara Atanes to go on an expletive-laden Twitter rant. However, this cloud had a silver lining, as the couple instead spent their summer living the high life in the United States.

Samir and Anara spent much of their summer in New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. There were private planes, nightclubs, award ceremonies and tough workouts.

Suddenly, the pain of missing out on a World Cup spot doesn't seem so intense.
