Alfonso Soriano is the type of guy that can carry you for weeks at a time. So says Bob Brenly, the color commentator for the Chicago Cubs.
Unfortunately, he's also the kind of guy that can slump for long periods of time, but this has gone on long enough. It's time for Soriano to be benched. And be benched for a long, long time. I've never seen a player with a track record like Soriano's struggle for so long. His average has dropped down every month (.284 in april, .216 in may, .198 in June, and .177 so far in July) and hasn't shown any signs at all of breaking out of his prolonged slump. So that's why it's time for Lou to sit him on the bench and run Jake Fox out in left field on an everyday basis. Sure, Fox isn't a great outfielder, but then again neither is Soriano (who has been playing some noticably horrible defense the last 2 weeks or so). And if Fox doesn't hit, then Lou could always put Sam Fuld in left (who unfortunately was sent down to the minors today but will probably be back soon).
Bottom line is, as a cubs fan, I absolutely can't stand to watch Soriano play anymore. I could take his defensive shortcomings as long as he hit like he usually does, but now I just can't take it. I don't know what Lou Piniella's love affair is with Fonzie, but it really has to stop.
