Finding the Cure for the Dallas Mavericks' Ailing Transition Game

Janet KesslerJul 6, 2009

To my regular readers:ย ย It will appear that Iย am repeating myself from my past couple of articles, so bear with me.ย
ย
My intentions are to bring together my thoughts as toย how the Mavericks need to fix the transition offense.
ย
To fully understand the ills of the Dallas Mavericks' transition game, we need to first understand what it is and how it's supposed to work.ย

Whether we call it aย fast break,ย run-and-shoot, run-and-gun, or whatever, it's all about transition.ย ย
ย
Transition in basketball is when the possession quickly shifts between theย two contending teams during the play of the game.ย ย ย

Transition offense first begins with a defensive stop of any kind, with the most common one being a rebound. The rebounder passes to the nearestย guard, who then passes it on to the forwards before they pass it on to one of the shooters.ย ย

The objective is to getย a score before the opponentย has a chance to set-up on defense.

This seems like a simple task, right?ย ย
ย
To me, this is the most magical part of the game.

The skill at the NBA level is so finely tuned, and there is no scripting to be done here because of time. It'sย all about action and reaction with the brilliant improvisation of the point guard, and the showcasing of pure individual athletic talent.

It looks so simple on paper, but we watched game after game last season as our Mavericks struggled to execute their offense. There are faults to be corrected at all five positions,ย but I'm only goingย to focus on theย two main culprits, which are the point guard and the center.

The Point Guardย

This is the initiator or quarterback of the offense.ย
ย
How many times last season, did we see this scenario?

Our point guard would lead a break in transition and be ahead of the wings. He would freely run the lanes, making dribble penetration into the opponents' paint, only to do a run-by under the basket with no layup attempt.

The ending results would be the Mavericks setting up a half court offense, which by then, the opponent is ready withย man-to-man coverage.
ย
How about this scenario?

Our point guard makes a dribble penetration andย balks on a layup,ย passing out 17 feet instead to the starting center (oh yeah,ย Damp can make that "J"). Those of usย stuck watching at home are left screaming at the TV, "SHOOT THE BALL KIDD!"
ย
I'm sure you've guessed that I'm talking aboutย Jason Kidd.

As much as I love whatย Kiddย has done for the Mavericks, I still have the right to hate him. His inability to take his own shots creates a nightmare of problems for the Mavericks.
ย
When it comes to statistics, he did make everyone better considering his passing is pure magic.

Just ask yourself this oneย simple question: Would you cover Kidd on defense?ย

No, you wouldn't waste your time and energy simply because you're going to help double-up the real shooters, Dirk, Josh, or Terry. Defenders don't see him as a scoring threat, which is why he gets left open at the three-point line.
ย
As a defender, I can live with him bricking up an occasional three-point attempt. If he starts ripping up the paint and making layups, then you will have my attention.
ย
Kidd will be leadingย the Mavericks offense for the 2009-10 season. He needs attempt around 15 shots a game, and make at least seven of them if the Mavs want to be contenders.ย
ย
I hope owner Mark Cuban andย coach Rick Carlisle make it very clear to him, I mean gun-to-the-head clear.ย

Just shoot the ball,ย Kidd!

ย
The Mavericks No. 1 problem with their transition offense is the center
ย
I saved my best bash for last.
ย
As I stated before, transition starts with a rebound. The Mavericks problem is that center Eric Dampier ranked third or fourthย on the team's rebounding list.
ย
How is that a problem when you have Dirk, Kidd, and Howard rebounding?

It's not like these guys are on your fantasy team.

In live transition basketball, it's rebounding by committee. The Mavericks had to rebound this way in order to make up for Dampier's shortcomings.
ย
Don't get me wrong, I love seeing Dirk, Kidd, and Howardย pad their lines off of boards.

However, it'sย puttingย everyone out of position for transition by putting the wings behind the point guard. Kidd has no one in front of him to pass to since they are allย fighting for boards.
ย
The center should be the anchor of the squad by grabbing a majority of the rebounds. At the same time, the wings should be breaking out in front of the point guard to take his pass. Of course, the center won't get all the rebounds, but he should still be the team's rebound leader.
ย
The only time I want Dirk to be dominant on the glass is when the Mavericks are playing small and he is the center. He is always good for a transition three as the trailer.

In my past articles, I have supported trading Jason Terry since he faded away into nothingness in the postseason. Terry was constantly beingย jammed up by none other than the opposing center.ย

Another very important role of our center is to set the screens for pick-and-roll plays.ย  Dampier was ineffective in keeping his manย away from Terry while setting his screen.ย

As soon as Terry tried to cut to the basket, he would hit aย wall of humanย flesh, which resulted in Dampier not being able to move fast enough to block outย his man.ย

We now have diagnosed the ailing Mavericks' offense. The Mavs have signed a possible cure in Marcin Gortat from the Orlando Magic.ย

Who is he you ask?

He's just the big man that backed up Dwight Howard last season.
ย
He is someone who doesn't wear cinderblocks for shoes, nor does he have oven-mitts for hands (I promised a bash). This is someone that can give the Mavericks something they haven't had in recent seasons, a scorer at the center position.ย

Rumors are running wild now as news that the Mavericks may be working on a two-headed monster for its center.ย

Will it be Gortat/Okafor or Gortat/Marion?

Will it be someone else?

Only time will tell for the Dallas Mavericks.
