AJ Lee was successful Sunday at Battleground in her first Divas Championship title defense since regaining the title as she defeated Paige and staved off her attempt to take the strap back.
WrestleZone.com had the result:
Fellow Diva Bayley tweeted her thoughts on the match:
Paige sent out a rather humorous tweet after the loss:
The rivalry between AJ and Paige has been a long-running one, although they had only competed in two short matches prior to Sunday night's encounter. It started when Paige made her main roster debut the night after WrestleMania XXX and shockingly defeated AJ for the championship in an impromptu match.
After holding the title for nearly three months, though, Paige found herself on the wrong end of a similar situation. AJ took some time off after dropping the Divas Championship to Paige, but she returned to challenge Paige and won the title back when the Anti-Diva reluctantly accepted.
That led to an interesting relationship between the two of them as they started to tag together and acted as though they were friends. They even started to exchange Twitter messages with AJ initially trying to smooth things over a week after beating Paige for the title in what was likely a tongue-in-cheek manner:
Paige got in on the act as well by tweeting her admiration for the woman who took the title that was so near and dear to her:
Following a few weeks of passive-aggressive behavior between the two combatants, they finally got in the ring with the Divas Championship on the line at Battleground. There has been much more emphasis placed on the Divas division as of late and this match was a great representation of that progress.
AJ and Paige are two of the best female wrestlers in WWE from an in-ring perspective, and they certainly didn't disappoint. They laid it all out on the line at Battleground and proved that the future of the Divas division is in very good hands.
This is a rivalry with some staying power, and there is no question that most fans would like to see a continuation of the feud. It can be argued that AJ winning makes that less likely since Paige no longer has an automatic rematch, but it's tough to imagine this not carrying over to at least SummerSlam.
There are still unresolved issues between them and plenty of ways to keep this angle fresh. The build toward Battleground focused on the faux friendship between AJ and Paige, but the build toward SummerSlam can be fueled by a more intense and hateful rivalry.
In addition to that, there is room for a stipulation to be added in order to differentiate their next match from this one. Since both AJ and Paige possess devastating submission holds in the Black Widow and PTO, respectively, perhaps an "I Quit" match could be in the offing at SummerSlam.
That could potentially be one of the best Divas matches in recent memory, especially if the build is handled properly. There has noticeably been more storyline support behind the Divas lately, and there is no doubt that AJ and Paige are at the forefront.
Even though AJ and Paige don't necessarily look and act like most Divas traditionally have over the years, the fans are very much behind them. They are two of the best in the business, and their interactions have been quite entertaining to this point.
AJ may have dealt Paige a big blow at Battleground, but this feud isn't over by a long shot.
