Lionel Messi Speaks to Nation as Argentina's World Cup Squad Meet President

Mark Patterson@@MarkPattersonBRUK Staff WriterJuly 15, 2014

Lionel Messi spoke to the nation as the Argentina team were given an audience with the country's president Cristina Kirchner after their run to the World Cup final.

Messi's words, translated on Sport24, were:

I just want to thank everyone for the welcome. I would have liked to have brought home the Cup and enjoyed it with you (the country). We gave everything we had but we just didn't manage it.

Messi, the same report adds, spent much of the event with a "pained look" on his face.

Despite the disappointment of defeat, Argentina's run was their best at a World Cup since they reached the same stage in 1990—where they also lost to Germany.
