Germany hoisted the World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time.

Mario Goetze scored the game- and final-winning goal with an incredible solo effort in the 113th minute.

Prior, things couldn't be settled in 90 minutes.

Lionel Messi created the first early chance of the match, burning Germany's back line and putting in a low, dangerous cross across the box.

Gonzalo Higuain had a golden opportunity to give Argentina the lead, as a Toni Kroos back pass gifted the Napoli man a one-on-one opportunity against Manuel Neuer, but he pulled his shot wide.

Higuain thought he gave Argentina the lead, but his 30th-minute strike was ruled offside.

Not long after, Messi again had an opportunity, but he couldn't capitalise.

Benedikt Howedes' amazing chance in injury time in the first half hit the post.

Messi nearly gave Argentina the lead in the 47th minute, but his shot went just wide.

Kroos spurned Germany's best chance of the second half, failing to put his shot on target after being set up by Mesut Ozil.

Ninety minutes couldn't settle things, as the teams headed for extra time scoreless.

Rodrigo Palacio had a chance early, but his attempt to chip Neuer went wide.
