Notre Dame QB Demetrius Jones Transferring to Northern Illinois?

IconIt appears that what was once a four-way quarterback controversy is now a two-man show.

According to a statement released by Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis, sophomore QB Demetrius Jones has elected not to travel with the team to Ann Arbor.

"At 2:30 today, while boarding the bus to Michigan, I was notified that Demetrius Jones had decided not to make the trip. I have not spoken to Demetrius and can only say that he missed the team bus. Any additional comment would be without all the facts."

According to Notre Dame message boards, including blueandgold.com, speculation has it that Jones is seeking a transfer to Northern Illinois University.

The development comes after Jones was dropped from the No. 1 QB spot after a rough outing against Georgia Tech, and freshman Jimmy Clausen was named the starter for the rest of the season.

While the news isn't entirely unexpected, the timing is certainly suspect, as the team is currently preparing to take on the Wolverines in the Big House in less than 24 hours.  I'm sure all Irish fans wish DJ well in the future, but the circumstances under which he made his decision are certainly less than ideal.
