Liverpool Transfer News: Reds Should Avoid Bidding War Over Antoine Griezmann

Real Sociedad star Antoine Griezmann has reportedly turned down a contract extension and is looking to leave the Basque outfit, but the Reds shouldn't get involved in a bidding war with some of Europe's biggest clubs.

According to AS (h/t to Insidespanishfootball's Tre Atkinson), the winger has his eyes set on a move to a bigger club, and Sociedad will likely cash in now with his contract expiring in 2016.

The Daily Mirror's John Cross immediately made the link with Liverpool, who have shown an interest in the French international following his excellent 2014 World Cup campaign.

Griezmann has been one of the game's brightest young stars in the past two seasons, playing as a scoring winger for Sociedad. Blessed with pace, trickery and a keen eye for goal, the hype surrounding the player is matched by his production.

The 23-year-old scored 16 goals in La Liga last season, per WhoScored.com, a very impressive number for a young player with plenty of room for growth. His potential is tantalizing, and unsurprisingly, plenty of clubs are reported to be interested in his services.

AS cites Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain as two interested parties, and it's the French champions who are believed to be the favourites to land his signature. Backed by some of the most powerful owners in the world, Les Parisiens can seemingly outbid any club in world football.

As shared by Bleacher Report's Jonathan Johnson, Griezmann acknowledged it would be hard to pass up an opportunity to play for PSG back in May:

PSG don't just have the financial means to outbid any other club for Griezmann's services—as the French champions, they make for a very attractive destination for the winger. The club is ever growing on the international stage, and the appeal of playing for the biggest club of your native country is a strong motivator.

As a club, Liverpool are also very much on the rise. The sale of Luis Suarez will add even more finances that can be used during the summer transfer window, and the Reds' future is bright.

But as painful as it must be for fans to admit, the Reds simply can't compete with PSG on the transfer market at this particular time. As storied a club Liverpool might be, the French champions simply are a more attractive transfer destination in 2014, both on a financial and sportive level.

Things would be different if both clubs were looking into a young, talented English player. But Griezmann isn't English—he's French. And with PSG doing everything they can to make sure France's top talents play for France's top team, Griezmann is right at the top of their list.

He's not the only one—via the Daily Star's Jack Wilson, they're also willing to offer Juventus an astonishing £60 million for Paul Pogba.

PSG's pockets are bottomless, and they couldn't care less about UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations. They know which players they want, and they usually get whoever they want.

For Rodgers, it's pointless to try and compete with that. Liverpool have little they can offer Griezmann to choose Anfield over the Parc des Princes, and even with the sale of Suarez, they lack the financial firepower to just outbid the French side.

It's a harsh reality, but in 2014, where oil-tycoons rule the transfer market, it's the way the game works. The Reds will be better served shifting their focus elsewhere as they look to strengthen the squad ahead of the 2014-15 Premier League season.
