After a miserable season, Louis van Gaal is looking to turn things around at Manchester United. The best way to do that is to bring in some elite talent in the transfer window.
It is understandable for fans to be a bit cautious this summer after the club missed on almost every target last season. However, the squad has a chance to bring in some really good players this offseason, all of which could make a major impact right away.
While there is still plenty of speculation in each situation, here are the latest rumours concerning the top players Manchester United are targeting this summer.
Arturo Vidal, Juventus
Although English fans might not have seen too much of Arturo Vidal playing for Juventus, the midfielder certainly showcased his ability for Chile at the World Cup.
Now he has a chance to make an impact for United with his current club looking to sell, according to David Anderson of The Mirror:
Manchester United have been boosted in their pursuit of Arturo Vidal because Juventus need to sell one of their star players. President Andrea Agnelli’s watchword is self-financing, and Juve must cash in on either Vidal or Paul Pogba to balance their books.
United are considering a £30m offer for Chile World Cup midfielder Vidal, which the Italian champions would find hard to refuse.
Adam Crafton of The Daily Mail points out that the English club feel good about their chances of bringing in the 27-year-old player:
United are yet to make formal contact with Juventus but are understood to have made tentative enquiries to establish whether the Chilean, who so impressed at the World Cup, would be open to a move.
It is believed that United are encouraged by the signals coming from Vidal's camp and a move is appearing increasingly feasible this summer.
Vidal certainly was non-committal about his future when asked during the World Cup, saying: "Will I stay at Juventus? I do not know. I just think about the World Cup and the national team now. After the World Cup we will see what will be my future," via Nadia Carminati of Sky Sports.
As a box-to-box midfielder with plenty of high-level experience, Vidal could make a huge impact at both ends of the pitch for Manchester United. If he is available, he should be a top priority for the high-profile club.
Mats Hummels, Borussia Dortmund
Almost everyone in Germany's squad has impressed in Brazil, making it no surprise that they have progressed to the World Cup final. However, few players have broken out as much as centre-back Mats Hummels.
The Borussia Dortmund player has been in perfect position for almost every minute of this tournament, intercepting passes and making key tackles.
After Hummels earned Man of the Match against France, his manager Joachim Low explained: "The way he fought for the ball was sensational. He's always in the right place," via Raphael Honigstein of ESPN FC.
As if this was not enough, the defender has even shown the ability to come through on the attack in this tournament and scored a pair of key goals, as noted by Squawka Football:
The player would be a great addition for Manchester United and a move is possible, according to Adrian Kajumba and Chris McKenna of the Daily Star:
Hummels, currently on World Cup duty with...Germany, is contracted to Dortmund until 2017. But sources close to the player offered United hope yesterday by refusing to rule out a move.
New Old Trafford boss Louis Van Gaal is a long-term admirer of Hummels.
Jamie Jackson of The Guardian notes that a deal for Hummels would cost United around £25m to £30m. Considering the current skill of the 25-year-old centre-back, this would be a worthwhile move.
With Nemanja Vidic gone, the decision is a no-brainer for the Premier League outift.
Angel Di Maria, Real Madrid
While Angel Di Maria has a chance to be a star for Real Madrid, Jackson explains why he might be heading to Manchester United:
Angel Di Maria is being monitored by Louis van Gaal, who has identified the Argentina and Real Madrid forward as a summer target for Manchester United. [...]
While United would be expected to propose a bid of around £40m, Real’s interest in Monaco’s James Rodriguez, who was Colombia’s star performer in Brazil, means they may be prepared to listen to an offer in the region of £45m for Di Maria, who is contracted until 2018. The 26-year-old signed a new deal two years ago.
This would chain of events would obviously bring a talented player to Real Madrid, but it would also greatly help out Manchester United.
Di Maria has proven his ability as one of the top distributors in the world, leading La Liga with 17 assists this past season. He has helped get the ball to Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale at club level and Lionel Messi with Argentina, making life easier for every one of them.
If he moves to England, he can help Robin van Persie once again become the top goalscorer in the Premier League.
No matter what formation Van Gaal chooses to run next season, Di Maria could still find a home and make a big impact on his prospective new team.
