Smith finished second in the Subway Firecracker 250 Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway Friday night.
It was a dominant performance for Smith and the No. 7 JR Motorsports team, but came up short of the win. Smith led 47 laps and set the pace all night long at Daytona. However, a late caution and extended racing due to a green-white-checkered finish was his undoing. The pack jockeyed hard behind the No. 7 Chevrolet, and Smith ultimately decided to slide down the track and block Kyle Larson. That's when the No. 5 Chevrolet mounted a late charge and passed Smith at the finish line by mere feet. It was his fourth Top-5 finish of the season. The good news is that the veteran driver jumped two spots and into the championship standings lead by 12 points over Elliott Sadler.
