Why is it that whenever Venus and Serena Williams meet in a tennis finale the conspirators become audible?
The 2009 Wimbledon Finals will feature a Williams sister, surprise, surprise. The Palm Beach Gardens residents have dominated Wimbledon seven of the past nine years. There has been at least one of them in the finals eight of the past nine Wimbledon's.
Serena, the youngest of the two, is No. 1 all time in women's tennis history for prize money won. She has won 20 Grand Slam titles. She is the reigning U.S. Open and Australian Open champion.
Venus is second behind her sister in prize money won. 17 Grand Slam titles are on her mantle and she is going for her third consecutive Wimbledon title.
This upcoming match will be the 21st time the sisters will meet. Both sisters are tied at 10 wins a piece.
It is obvious that these women are great at what they do.
They have trained the majority of their lives to be where they are today.
So why do folks out there feel the need to question their heart?
Why do we need to hear that they will not play full strength because across the net is a sibling?
Do folks not know the competitive juices that flows in most athletes?
Why don't I hear the same thing when Peyton and Eli Manning match up, when the Barry brothers in basketball would play one another, when the Boone brothers in baseball would play?
Is it because tennis is an individual sport (for the most part)?
I don't know about anyone else, but I know when I used to play my brother, my sisters, my mother, or my father in any competition I was playing to win. Why should it be any different for these two ladies?
