NBA, Cleveland Cavaliers, Washington Wizards, Gilbert Arenas, Antwan Jamison, Brendan Haywood, Editorial, Editorial

As a native Clevelander living in D.C., the past couple of weeks have been unbearable.

The hatred of Cleveland, the Cavaliers, and especially LeBron James has been palpable. We heard it all: overrated, overprotected, over-hyped, crybaby. But in the end, the Cavs eliminated the Wizards for the third consecutive year at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

Why? Because they ignored the BS, played basketball and played as a team.

Now, I could focus on how LeBron was the bigger and better man. Or I could focus on how under appreciated Zydrunas Ilgauskas is in the grand scheme of things. The fact that Daniel "Boobie" Gibson is becoming Mr. May in Cleveland sports lore and that Wally Szczerbiak found his magic stroke for the first time in who knows how long were also huge factors.

But to me the biggest fact in the series had nothing to do what the Cavs did;  it had everything to do with what the Wizards TRIED to do.

The NBA has had its share of bullies. The Bad Boys of the Detroit Pistons and the Pat Riley-led New York Knicks come to mind. After that, there are about 100 other teams that you would put ahead of the Washington Wizards.

Why you would try and play Hardguy when you are about as soft as soft can be?

The sad thing is that the Wizards could have (and really should have) won the series if they had just played their style of basketball. The Cavs don't have the legs or the gunners that Washington posses. But rather than just play their game, the Wizards players took it upon themselves to try and be tough and play selfish.

The only player who is exempt from this whole embarrassment is Antawn Jamison.  From day one, he said the Wiz just needed to shut up and play basketball and that's what he did.  He often gets overlooked because his flamboyant teammates steal the spotlight, but this two-time All-Star is a great player and a great person.

Jamison is an unrestricted free agent and I hope he finds a new team and city that appreciates him more and utilizes him better than Washington.

But the BS that is the Wizards all starts with their captain, Agent 0.

Now, Gilbert Arenas is a great player, but he is a selfish one, first and foremost.

When he "shut it down" before Game Five, I was very nervous. Anyone who watched the Wizards all year could see that with Agent 0 out, the offense ran more smoothly through Caron Butler and Jamison. Supplementary players like Brendan Haywood, Antonio Daniels, and Roger Mason got touches and were productive all year.

But Agent 0 couldn't miss the playoffs. Not when he's opting out of his contract and is going to be on National TV. And he started the entire month of trash talking by saying the Wizards (and the entire Eastern Conference) wanted the Cavs and LeBron James because they knew they were beatable.

How'd that wish turn out for you, chief?  Looks like the Hibachi has been turned off for the summer.

Mr. Tough Juice, Caron Butler, who came up big in Game Five, came up small in Game Six. When the Cavaliers focused their attention to him, he wilted. Horribly. He had the quietest 18 points you could ever have. He didn't get his teammates involved, as he had only one assist. He was visually frustrated throughout the game. I wouldn't call that Juice. I'd call it Tinkle. Enjoy the offseason, Tough Tinkle.

Brenda Haywood called LeBron soft, called him a crybaby, and made fun of him at every opportunity. This from a guy who couldn't get out of coach Eddie Jordan's doghouse until this year, has had conditioning and effort issues since he entered the league, and has a history of sucker-punching Etan Thomas because he couldn't beat him out for more playing time.

Brenda: the Washington Mystics’ season just started, maybe you can be more effective there. Considering you have no balls, you should be allowed to play.

And then of course there is No. 2, DeShawn Stevenson.

Ah yes. No. 2 really started everything in the regular season when he called LeBron overrated after James missed a game-winning 3. Um, No. 2, who are you? The fact that you are one of the few starting players who makes under $1M should tell you something about your standing in the NBA.

No. 2: those three points you put up in Game One were great. And then you backed it up with 12 points in a 30-point loss in game 2. But hey, the "you can't see my face gesture" you did while down by 20 points was priceless.

The only reason I could think of why you did this is that you were checking to see if you hand smelled like ass, but it was your head you were smelling since it has been up your ass for weeks now. And the 2-for-9, 10-point clunker you trotted out in the clincher was the perfect way to end your season, No. 2.

Because you showed everyone that not only do you wear No. 2...you ARE No. 2!  A big, stupid, ignorant, walking, talking piece of No. 2 and you made your who team come off as No. 2 when it was all said and done as well.

  1. That was straight and sweeeeet....#2 who?...he shudnt be even playing basketball...go work in the McDonalds...

  2. U are retarded. But right about one thing: the Wiz should have won the series.
They are a better team and they got themselves psyched out.
Too bad. But leave Deshawn alone.
Wiz are a fun cool team. Who cares about a little trash talk.

  3. You know, Doc, LeBron, whom you hilariously refer to as "the bigger man," started the trash talk with DeShawn. I do wish the Wizards in general would have done less talking, but in DeShawn's case, he was only responding to LeBron mouthing off behind his back. Since you're in DC, I'm sure you've already heard about this. DeShawn is simply cast as the villain because he would dare to go after the ultimate media darling. LeBron wants to be Jordan, and ESPN wants him to be, too, but so far, LeBron is only like Jordan in that they are both huge jerks whom the media paints as choir boys in baggy shorts.

    1. Ah yes, yes. Just like the NBA handed the Cavs this series. Let the conspiiracy theorists unite. Until you win something you have no place to talk. So the Wiz and #2 have no place to talk.

  4. Yes I agree who cares about a little trash talk.. O wait... In the Wizards case, maybe they should try and win a playoff series against the CAVS and Lebron before they start running off at the mouth... Antwan Jamison was right.. they should of shut up and play.

O yea.. Im almost glad now that Lebron missed that last second layup in game 5. To go in and hand the Wiztards a loss like that on their home court was poetic and damn funny.

Dave.. Deshawn had no business talking trash to James.. Deshawn is at best a mediocre player that obviously doesn't know his role in the NBA. His extracurricular activities really did make him look rediculous on and off the court... Almost as reducilous as James made the entire Wiztard team look in game 6. The only thing flashy or entertaining about the Wiz on Friday was Agent 0's choice of attire...

    WITNESS....

    1. Let me get this straight: LeBron talks smack about DeShawn, but DeShawn is not allowed to respond, because it is LeBron? So if James started talking about you, since you're not as successful as he is (no offense, but it's a pretty safe assumption for all of us), you wouldn't say a word back to him?

    2. Sometimes it's best to let your play do your talking if you aren't established. It's no surpirse that Antwan Jamison did just that and performed phenominally all series. #2 should have followed suit.

  5. Yeah I totally agree with this rant, the Cavs are so great, hey can someone help me out I cant seem to remember the last time the Cavs or the Browns won a championship....hmm I'm sure it will come to me...

    1. It's the Browns in 1964. When was the last time the Wizards were relevant?

    2. How about 1977-1978. The Bullets won it all. The Wizards ARE the Bullets -- the name was changed due to a mandate by Abe Pollin -- since he felt that the name then carried violent overtones and wanted to put that to rest.

    3. Exactly. It's been 30 years. When I first moved down to DC the Bullets were a joke at best, they have come a long way but have gotten out of the 1st Round once in 4 years after a lengthy play-off drought. My point was, until they show some consistant play-off success they should keep quiet.

  6. I am so, so, so glad that this series is finally over, DeShawn Stevenson can go back to doing whatever the DeShawn Stevenson's of the world do, and the Cavs are moving on.

And if you want a player who might be overrated...what about Jamison? I admire him and Butler for being the two mature voices on the Wizards, but Jamison has won just one playoff series - with the Wizards back in '05 - and is building that rep of a guy who puts up big numbers but is not a winner. I was not scared one bit of anything that Jamison did in this series - he can not carry a team to a victory.
