The chaos of July 1, the opening day of the 2014 free-agency period in the NHL, may trickle down to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Or it may not.

Ron Francis will navigate the market for the first time in his career as a general manager, hoping to make the subtle changes that will end the Hurricanes' five-year playoff drought in the coming 2014-15 season.

Chip Alexander of The News & Observer reports that Francis expects to initially play it safe, seeking to bolster the strength and toughness of the team's lower forward lines and improve defensive depth.

Will Francis stick to his word? If so, which out-of-town FAs will he sign to address those holes? Or will an opportunity for a bolder move arise?

Follow every Hurricanes rumor and transaction—and a first-take reactionon the opening day of free agency in our live-updated blog.
