The 2014 NHL draft was further proof that a later pick doesn't always reap a lesser prospect.

Teams reach. And when that happens, players who should have already heard their name called fall into the lap of extremely lucky teams.

Here are the best values in Round 1, as well as a list of draft grades and results.

Best Round 1 Values

4. RW Nikita Scherbak, Saskatoon

Drafted No. 26 by the Montreal Canadiens. Ranked No. 15 North American skater by NHL.com.

Matt Slocum/Associated Press

Scherbak isn't necessarily the greatest steal in the history of professional sports, but the Canadiens were probably surprised as much as they were smiling that he hadn't been picked yet at 26th overall. He should have been.

He was a scoring machine in the WHL this season. He recorded 28 goals and 50 assists, averaging out at 1.2 points per game.

3. C Jared McCann, Sault Ste. Marie

Drafted No. 24 by the Vancouver Canucks. Ranked No. 10 North American skater by NHL.com.

The Canucks had two picks in the first round. If they had selected McCann sixth overall, it would have been a reach but not one large enough to get them on the list of worst Round 1 values.

But Vancouver didn't select him sixth overall. And when it was on the clock again 18 picks later, for some odd reason, no one else had picked McCann either. The Canucks couldn't pass on him a second time, and they walked away big winners as a result.

2. RW Kasperi Kapanen, Kalpa

Drafted No. 22 by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Ranked No. 1 European skater by NHL.com.

Kapanen has been the No. 1 European skater for a while. He wasn't the first off European skater off the board, though. In fact, he was the fourth.

William Nylander, Kevin Fiala and one of the worst values in Round 1 were drafted ahead of him. While Pittsburgh's trade of James Neal is being questioned, there's no doubt it left Round 1 with a steal.

1. C Samuel Bennett, Kingston

Drafted No. 4 by the Calgary Flames. Ranked No. 1 North American skater by NHL.com.

Any time a team can draft a prospect who's arguably the best in the draft at fourth overall, it's a cause for celebration. That's what Calgary pulled off in this year's draft.

While there wasn't a consensus No. 1 prospect in the class, Bennett shouldn't have fallen to No. 4. He racked up 54 goals, 77 assists and a rating of plus-32 in his past two OHL seasons.
