The bizarre pairing of Goldust and Stardust continued to roll Sunday night, as it defeated Ryback and Curtis Axel at Money in the Bank. WrestlingINC had the news:
WWE legend Jim Ross had a comparison for the winning duo:
Stardust and Goldust were interviewed after the match:
After weeks of struggling, Cody Rhodes decided to step aside and find his brother a better tag team partner. A number of options tried and failed, which prompted Rhodes to go in a different direction. Cody claimed he had found Goldust the perfect partner, which led to plenty of speculation.
Ultimately, it ended up being Stardust, which is simply Rhodes in Goldust-esque attire, as seen in this photo courtesy of WWE's Instagram account:
The "new" duo immediately clicked on all cylinders, as they defeated Rybaxel on Raw and got back into a groove. It seemed like nobody was quite sure how to react to Stardust, but he ended up receiving a pretty favorable reaction following his debut.
As strange as Goldust's character has been over the course of his career, even he is taken aback by the antics of Stardust:
Two people who clearly weren't impressed, though, were Ryback and Axel. After getting embarrassed by Goldust and Stardust on Raw, Rybaxel decided to challenge the eccentric pairing to a match at Money in the Bank on Main Event.
The challenge was accepted, but it didn't exactly work out for the heels. Leading up to the match, Axel hurled some inflammatory comments in Stardust's direction:
Perhaps that served as motivation for Goldust and Stardust. Although this was viewed by most as a throwaway match to add some depth to the Money in the Bank card, both teams put forth an honest effort and had a solid match.
This was clearly meant to be a showcase for Goldust and Stardust, though, and that is precisely what the fans were treated to. Now that the brotherly team has defeated Rybaxel again and ostensibly ended the feud, it will be interesting to see how they are handled moving forward.
WWE currently has a couple of solid tag teams in the form of The Usos and Wyatt Family, but the division is lacking after that. Luke Harper and Erick Rowan could use some new opponents after feuding with The Usos for a couple of months, so that could be where Goldust and Stardust fit in.
At the same time, it wouldn't be particularly shocking to see Goldust and Stardust enter into a program against each other in the near future. That has been the expectation for quite some time, but nothing has come of it.
Tension was teased when Rhodes was eliminated by Goldust in the 2014 Royal Rumble match. Both Superstars were put on the back burner after that, however, which resulted in the situation being essentially forgotten about.
Things heated back up when the team started to lose regularly and Rhodes decided to stop teaming with Goldust, but the creative team went the Stardust route instead. Of course, Rhodes becoming Stardust could be the precursor to an eventual rivalry between them.
Whether or not Rhodes competes as Stardust or himself in that scenario is anyone's guess. The WWE Universe has wanted to see a proper Goldust vs. Rhodes feud for quite some time, so Rhodes wrestling as himself would probably be the preference of most.
Rhodes is one of the best in-ring workers in WWE today, while Goldust is arguably better in that regard than he ever has been over the course of his career. Add in Goldust's impressive psychological acumen and the built-in brother vs. brother aspect of the potential feud, and it would have something for every wrestling fan.
WWE has been all over the map regarding Goldust and Rhodes over the past several months, so it is nearly impossible to predict what will come next. Both of them are such talented performers, though, that there is definite potential for something special to manifest itself.
