After seven rapid-fire rounds over the course of two days, the 2014 NHL draft at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia is complete.

A bevy of surprising selections and trades highlighted the action on Friday and Saturday, from Florida Panthers' No. 1 overall pick Aaron Ekblad, right on down to Jacob Middleton, the No. 210 overall selection.

While not as highly regarded as classes in recent years, the 2014 offering touted American and European talent that can step in and contribute right away, along with loads of developmental talent that can mature over time before taking the pro ice.

Led by intriguing centers such as Ekblad, Sam Reinhart and Sam Bennett, it certainly made for an event that may be looked back upon as a critical point in the current era. The vast amount of trades will also be a focal point in hindsight.

The NHL calendar now hits another crucial point with free agency set to commence, when franchises will look to rounds out rosters in the hope of contending next season.
