The right tackle was one of the spots on the line that was thought to be up for grabs, between junior Cory Brandon and sophomore Jarvis Jones (transfer from LSU). Going into the summer, Brandon began drawing raves from the coaching staff and looks to have locked up the starting spot for the season. Brandon saw action in nine games last season as a reserve tackle.
Look for this offensive line to be quicker and a lot more athletic than the line from the 2008 season, making the fast-paced no-huddle offense of the Sooners even more of a threat. Even though this squad seems to have some youth and inexperience, they have a unique opportunity to be as good as last season.
The 2009 Edition of the Red River Shootout:
Why did this game make the top five list? Shouldn’t this game be a given every season? Well, unless you lived under a rock last year, or did not own an airplane/sign business, then you know why this game has made my list.
It became the biggest controversy of the 2008 season when the Oklahoma Sooners jumped ahead of the Longhorns in the final BCS Standings of the season to play for the Big 12 Championship and the BCS National Title Game, despite falling to Texas earlier in the season 45-35.
According to most preseason polls, this matchup will most likely feature the two teams being ranked within the top three in the country, and the two returning quarterbacks in Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy look to be early and strong front-runners for the 2009 Heisman Trophy.
The rivalry already produces so much hate and animosity between the two schools, yet with last year's controversy, this year’s matchup looks to be a battle to the death gladiator-style. The winner of this game looks to have the inside track to make the national title game once again that is of course some jumping is not involved again. So Sooner fans get ready to hear the score of last years game about 3.7 million times during your trip to Dallas. But rest easy since we have brought home the last three Big 12 Titles.
A Receiving Corp with Something To Prove:
With the loss of two of OU’s most prolific wide receivers in Juaquin Iglesias and Manuel Johnson, and the improved and reformed emergence of Quentin Chaney, the Sooners seem to have lost a lot at that position, but will be just fine.
Don’t get me wrong. Those three will be missed immensely, yet those stepping in have quite a bit of talent as well. Now he may not be classified as a receiver, but senior tight end Jermaine Gresham proved to be one of Sam Bradford’s favorite targets. Gresham recorded a team-high 14 touchdowns last season, including the only two touchdowns in the national title game against Florida. With such a weapon as Gresham, defenses will have to pick their poison this season: double team Gresham and leave an open receiver, or leave the 6’6" freak single covered.
