Xherdan Shaqiri netted a hat trick to lead Switzerland to the knockout stages of the World Cup in a 3-0 drubbing of Honduras on Wednesday.

Switzerland's spot was secured after Ecuador and France played to a 0-0 draw.

It was the competition's second hat trick (Thomas Muller) and the 50th in the history of the World Cup.

Shaqiri gave the Swiss a quick lead in the sixth minute with an incredible strike from outside the 18-yard box.

His goal revealed a fairly bizarre statistic:

0-1 (6') With Shaqiri scoring for Switzerland every shirt number from 1 to 23 has now scored at the 2014 World Cup except '1'. #HON #SUI

Shaqiri got his brace with another strike in the 31st minute.

He then bagged his hat trick and secured the three points with a neat finish in front of the net.

#sui 3-0 #hon - Shaqiri - a hat-trick. They are through unless #ecu can find a way to beat #fra
