NFL, AFC East, New England Patriots, Preview/Prediction

The other Patriots fans and I are undoubtedly disappointed that Rodney Harrison didn't make a better decision and lift his hand and knock out the ball from David Tyree, and Ellis Hobbs didn't keep up with Plaxico Burress, so, if all that happened 19-0 would have happened.

All that didn't happened and what the Patriots got out of last season was a slap in the face compared to previous years. All that aside the Patriots still have a chance to go undefeated in the regular season because of their easy schedule (except for games against the Colts and Chargers).

Not to sound like an absolute full of myself as a Patriots fan, but the draft brought in a lot of young talent that could make this defense unstoppable. Not to mention the return record setters Randy Moss and Tom Brady.

Don't forget about Wes Welker who, in the 2007 season,  was tied for the league lead in catches (118).

Now this season, the Patriots will have the best receiving core and an amped defensive set including players like Jerod Mayo.

This defense was in need of an overhaul, but wasn't helped out by the departure of Asante Samuel. It was helped when Fernando Bryant came over from the Lions during the off-season, not to mention the solid draft that they had in which they addressed every need.

I believe that they got great deals, though Dan Connor could have been drafted instead of a corner back.

Also, they signed Scott Player, a former punter for the Cardinals who will spend a lot of time on the bench(The Patriots almost never punt), but is still a nice commodity to have.

Now to address Spygate. Since I live in New York I get a lot of smack for being a Patriots fan from Jets fans in my grade. The Jets fans keep telling me that Belichick was cheating all along, and that Mangini didn't do anything when he was a patriots coach while this was happening.

But that's just it, why would he bring this up when his team got absolutely pulverised by his now rivals, and not when he was a coach. I'll tell you why, because he wanted to get back at the Patriots organization for not bringing him back, and for just flat out being better.

On that note I will leave everyone with the information above. Feel free to revise if you deem it necessary.

  1. They will again be one of the Elite teams in the league...but undefeated wont happen

  2. I agree with TJ but they will not go undeafted. Sure they maybe had a good draft and what not but rookies can't make an orginization go 19-0.

  3. Nino, first of all Mangini left because he was offered a head coaching job. It's not like the Patriots got rid of him. You have no proof that Mangini was in on anything that Belickeck was doing. Mangini wasn't even the one who revealed spygate. It was a person who discovered the filimng being done during a Patriots-Jets game. Second of all Asante Samuel is one of the top 3 defenders in the league. His leaving is gonna creat a gigantic impact on the defense. There defense is not unstoppable. It's just that there offense scores so much that the defense isn't needed. That won't be the case with many teams amping up their defense this offseason especially in the AFC East.

    1. Dacher are you kidding me. He rated Bill out. He knew it was happeninh when he was there.

    2. Finbar you know nothing about sports. You're a stuck up yankee's fan who thinks everyone and everything that is not associated with the yankees sucks. just stop trying. and learn how to spell

  4. I'm looking at their schedule, and 2 losses are probable, plus, a couple others could be surprises.
Then it comes down to who they face in the playoffs, the injury factor, and even the luck factor, things you can't predict happening, or want to imagine.

  5. I'd venture a guess that 19-0 this season isn't that far from a possibility. With that said, I'll say "Any given Sunday"-yep, the Pats could've easily been the Dolphins first win last season. Anything could happen any given Sunday.

While the Pats will miss Samuels, let's face it-he was good but not truly great. More than half of his "interceptions" came from deflections....heck, even I could catch the ball when it's handed to me.

The defense needed to get beefed up, and it did. There were some good drafts made, and I think they'll work out fine. However, only time can tell.

As for the offense, some thing that most everyone forgets is that Brady set a league record by completing TD passes to 21 different Pats players. While most teams have one or 2 go to men, Brady is more than comfortable passing to his 3rd, 4th and 5th string receivers. Hell, Brady would probably pass it to the mascot for a TD (joke of course). The running game picked up the last half of the '07 season, and I think this year we'll see more of it to help avoid the pass rushing on Brady.

19-0 is a possibility....but as I'm not holding my breath.

  6. Ok one more time. MANGINI RATTED BELICHICK OUT!!! Why else would someone walk around looking for cameras at a L-O-S-E JETS JETS JETS game:)

  7. Nino, Mangini thought Bekuchik was doing something, we researched it and was right, don't cry because your favoriate team is full of cheaters.

    1. Mike, seriously-you have absolutely NO CLUE about what you're talking about. Tell you what, I'm not even going to bother responding to your reply. Seeing how you completely misspelled Belichick, I seriously doubt that you researched anything at all.

    2. I didnt researxh anything, becuase theres nothing to research and I went alittle over board about there entire team is cheaters, but come on you know the Jets arent that stupid that they walk around looking for cameras in the crowd.

    3. If that's you in your picture, then you're quite young and I'll not be mean here ;)

The Jets didn't scope the crowd for cameras. The Pats employee doing the taping was on their sidelines in plain sight panning between the bench (def. signals) and the time clock (scoreboard). Essentially, what this does for the team (Pats) is let's them know that with (for example) 4:39 seconds left in the 1st quarter they go for it on 3rd down looking for a conversion 9 out of 10 times or on the flip side they blitz 7 out of 10 times when they're facing an opponent whose 3rd and short. Taping the signals let's them know what play was made at what point in the game and panning up to the score board let's them know where they were on the field and what kind of field position they were in.

In all actuality, and I truly do hate to open this can of worms, the Pats were fined for filming from an improper camera location rather than what they were filming. Should the Pats have filmed from, say, the press box for example, it would've been fine. Because the tape wasn't being used during the game, Belichick thought it was OK (his "interpretation of the rules"). We all know how it went from there. They were fined and penalized due to an infraction of where they filmed from-not for "cheating" per say.

I hope that helps to clear things up a bit. The entire spygate deal is blown out of proportion and has dragged on for what seems like forever. I'm about sick of it to be honest.

  8. Alrite, first things first. I have no problem with the Patriots. i personally believe Spygate has been goin on for a long time but Nino. You're article is 100% bias. Your a complete front runner, your articles are not only horrible written and biased, but for the most part are unfactual. i guarantee you did not do a sceonds worth fo research and that you just spouted off random things you think you know about sports. I'm not saying stop writing just do a little background research before you run your mouth.

  9. I'm not trying to make an unbiased article. This is only for Patriots nation

    1. Nino i still am baffled by your lack of loyalty to teams. Your a front runner. You switch teams based on who recently won the Championship and who looks good to do it again. In the case of the Patriots you became a fan AFTER they won the superbowl and for a while after the superbowl you were going around stating you were a Giants fan. I don't consider you a true fan because you have no loalties lying anywhere. Your a fence sitter. You're just waiting for the outcome.

    2. I never walked around school saying that I was a Giants fan. That was a terrible rumor that wasn't even true. And besides I started liking the patriots after their first super bowl win because thats when i became interested in the NFL, and the Patriots were the only team I'd heard of before that(They were always on TV).

    3. That is such a lie. Dude i heard the words come out of your mouth.

  10. Sounded like more of an informative piece than one focusing on the Pats' attempt at going 19-0 this season.

I would have liked you to write more about their defensive additions that will make them, as you say, unstoppable. Their linebacking core is very much aging, and there comes a time when "experienced" becomes "old."

You can voice your opinion on Mangini's motives in another article. I'd like to read what you have to say about that situation, but it doesn't particularly belong in an article about the Pats going 19-0.

Why is Scott Player a nice commodity to have? Has he proven an exceptional punter? What are his recent stats? Will he be a good fit in the cold-weather climate of Boston as opposed to the climate-controlled dome in Phoenix?

You say the Pats still have the best receiving core in the NFL, but doesn't the loss of Stallworth affect their fluidity?

The Patriots do have a relatively soft schedule, facing the AFC West and the NFC West. They should once again be the top team in the AFC East, but I don't see them going 16-0 in the regular season again. They play too many prime time games to be perfect in all of them in the spotlight, and no matter how businesslike the team may act, the finality of their 1st, and lone, loss will have a negative effect on their play in '09.

  11. I don't want 19-0...too much stress.

    1. 19-0 would be great. Now, 18-1, that's to much stress.

  12. I feel robbed by the sports gods that I didn't get to see an undefeated team in my lifetime. I also won't get to see an undefeated team in my lifetime. It just doesn't happen.

Patriots: 14-2, AFC East Champions, home field advantage in playoffs, SB Champions. They're still the best team in the league, if you ask me.

But they won't go 19-0... however good that would be for history, especially after an 18-1 season.

As a side note, I'm not sure if the Pats play the Giants. But I hope the final score is Pats 100, Giants 0. They ruined something special that we won't see again in pro football before the year 2100.
