Alfonso Soriano does it again! By doing it again I mean the usual. You know, strike out with men on base, lazy fly balls, and jog to a ball on the warning track that is a sure out only to see it fly over his head and bounce into the St Louis crowd.
How many chances will he get? He is hands down the worst piece of the Cubs roster right now. Maybe its pressure, maybe its injuries, or maybe its just another bad move by Cubs general management. He was over the age of 30 when he became a Cub. This is usually a good sign that the player is nearing or has passed the peak of his career.
This article will be short and sweet. Alfonso Soriano sucks and does not belong in left field. And if he does belong in left field, he certainly doesn't belong in the leadoff spot.
I'm curious as to what the rest of Cubs nation thinks. My opinion: Soriano hits in the 6 spot after spending at least 3 weeks in AAA to prove a point that you have to TRY to play in order to be a Chicago Cub.

Just think, for all that money, they could have had Barry Zito.

Soriano is a good player. Nobody expected him to be injured as frequently as he has. I know a lot of people are unhappy with him leading off, but I don't think the Cubs "wasted" money on him per se. Yes, he didn't deserve $138 million, but Barry Zito (as Greg alludes to) didn't deserve $127 million.
I blame Free Agency personally. Derrek Lee signed a $65 million/5-year contract in April 2006. Then the Cubs sign Aramis Ramirez for $89 million/5-year in November 2006. Just by Ramirez waiting and filing for Free Agency after the series he earned about $30-40 million more than he is worth.
Soriano's deal is stupid, yes, but I do like the Cubs having him. Once he heats up, he is awesome. It's easy to get on him now and not when he hit 3 HR against the Braves on June 8, 2007.
I see your argument, but I'd wait until the end of May before I would really get on his case.

What does injury have to do with swinging at a pitch that bounces 12 inches in front of the plate. Oh!....You mean brain injury....I'm sorry. - Life long Cubs fan

What a bust he is! And they owe the guy more than $100 million still? You know what, maybe Zito was a worse signing but not by much. He can't play defense, now he can't run anymore.
He should have been forced to get some at-bats in the minors before being activated from the DL.
Who's running the show? Where is Jim Hendry? Too busy kissing Sori's ass.

Piniella and Hendry are damaging the team over and over. Hendry's biggest mistake, other than hiring Piniella, is signing Soriano. He's a selfish, useless, all flash, no substance player. He can't hit for contact in key situations, can't drive people in, is almost a guaranteed out, and a total mess in the field. The number of outfield assists is exceeded by the number of blunders.
Hendry should be fired for signing him, Piniella for batting him first. The surest sign that Piniella has lost his marbles is his comparison of Soriano to Bobby Bonds. Bonds had a .400 OBP, Soriano has a career .325 OBP. The leadoff man's job is to get on. He doesn't. That sinks your lineup. Then Piniella wonders about the team's offensive inconsistency. He clearly has no awareness whatsoever of the fact that team OBP is the statistic with the highest correlation to run totals. Soriano needs to bat sixth at the highest, behind Soto and ahead of DeRosa, who himself has no business in a run-producing spot instead of Soto.
The only thing worse than the amount of money the Cubs blew on Soriano is that he'll be taking up a valuable spot on the field and in the lineup for the duration of his contract. Not only can they not spend that money on someone good, a "winning-type player," as they say, but they can't even put such a player in--Murton comes to mind--because Soriano is jamming up the works. He's the definition of a losing-type player, and if we lose this year, he's a primary reason. Still, if he stays in the 1 hole, that makes Piniella an even bigger reason for our lack of success. Get this guy off my team, get us a manager and a general manager. Please god.

I agree, Soriano is a disease that has to be caged. Though, he must be really sensitive or something, or else Lou wouldn't be wiping his butthole like a helpless child, or hes got a Dusty Baker/ Neifi Perez type love affair going. Could Lou be a closet homo? It's not my place to judge, but it is his place to manage. Start running this thing like a business Lou, best man plays, best team wins. Who cares if Soriano cries himself to sleep at night, or his mama not be proud of him. He needs to serve some time in the minor leagues like everyone else, swallow his pride, (Lou's man-juice) and get this show on the road. Everybody says he'll come around, well, let's hope he fruckin does, because we got him for quite some time. (way to go Hendry)(ASS) And I don't know what the batting order should be, I'm not a manager, but I'll tell you what, Soriano is not your run of the mill lead off hitter, and should not be there.

Wow i'm so excited for 35 home runs a year, with 20 of them being solo shots. Don't care about Soriano. He's a hell of a hitter in a 5 spot, not a leadoff hitter.
