In a match up of team aces, Chein Ming Wang got the best of Eric Bedard as the Yankees beat the Mariners 5-1.

Wang continued to be the Yankee stopper pitching six strong innings giving up just one run on 3 hits while striking out 5.  The Yankees got to Bedard early by jumping on him for 3 runs in the first two innings.

In the first, Jeter reached on third baseman Adrian Beltre's error before Bobby Abreu singled.  After Shelley Duncan struck out, Hideki Matsui singled home Jeter to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the second Melky Cabrera's RBI double scored Morgan Ensberg and Alex Gonzalez to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Wang improved to 6-0 on the year and continues to be a near guaranteed win every fifth day.  He looked dominant all night but had a scary moment as he appeared to injure his finger in the fifth inning, but was able to stay in and finish the inning and come back out for the 6th.

Bedard (2-1) was the hard luck loser of his first game of the year.  He gave up 3 runs, 1 earned on 4 hits in 7 innings while striking out 6.  After the 2nd inning he did not allow a hit and didn't allow a baserunner after the 3rd.

The M's only run came when Ichiro singled and stole 2nd and 3rd with one out and Raul Ibanez had an RBI groundout in the 6th.

The Yankees added two runs in the 8th on an single by Morgan Ensberg and a sac fly by Jose Molina.

Kyle Farnsworth pitched a perfect 7th, Joba Chamberlain worked the 8th, and Mariano Rivera finished it in the 9th.

The win snapped a three game losing streak for the Yankees as they improved to 15-16 and the Mariners fell to 13-17.  The teams will play again tomorrow starting at 1:05 PM with Felix Hernandez (2-1) vs Mike Mussina (3-3).

  1. Wang looked real good tonight, but what really surprised me was how Farnsworth put together a good inning. Oh well, King Felix is going tomorrow, hopefully it will end up better for the M's.
