Silvestre Varela scored a late, last-ditch equaliser for Portugal to stun the United States 2-2 and keep the former's hopes of advancing to the knockout stage alive. 

On Portugal's last attack of the match, Cristiano Ronaldo picked out Varela with a perfect cross.

Clint Dempsey gave the Americans a shocking late lead, as he used his body to knock in a cross to give the United States the late 2-1 lead in their Group G clash.

Jermaine Jones scored a stunning leveler previously. It was his first-ever World Cup goal and was quite impressive.

Nani had previously opened the scoring for Portugal in the fifth minute, pouncing on a failed clearance from the American back line.

Portugal nearly doubled their lead, but Tim Howard made an incredible save to keep the Americans in the match.

Michael Bradley had a chance early in the second half to level for the United States, but defender Ricardo Costa made an incredible goal-line clearance.
