As the final seconds were winding down in what was about to be a 2-1 victory and an advancement to the knockout round for the United States men's national team, Portugal struck.
Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a perfect cross to Silvestre Varela, who headed in a game-tying goal in stoppage time to score a 2-2 draw and leave the outcome of Group G up in the air.
The goal erased what looked to be another comeback victory for the U.S. After an awful defensive lapse early, Team USA let Nani score to make it 1-0 Portugal. That score would remain throughout the first half.
Jermaine Jones kicked a heroic equalizer in the 63rd minute, and then, Clint Dempsey put the U.S. up in the 80th minute with a full-body finish in front of the net. Jurgen Klinsmann made some strategic substitutions late in the second half, most notably on defense, and it appeared his moves would give Team USA the six points it needed to lock its advancement. That all came unraveled with yet another spectacular finish at this 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The U.S. must now earn at least a tie against Germany to guarantee a spot in the knockout round.
