Changes Needed in Ann Arbor: Time for Michigan to Ditch "Smashmouth" Football

IconI am trying to be as non-biased as a lifelong Michigan fan can be; however, anyone can see that the Wolverines aren't the perennial powerhouse they once were.

I believe that alot of that has to do with the Big Ten's "old school"  mentality. Nowadays, the game is more about speed and finesse rather than smashmouth football(unfortunately). It's obvious that Michigan cannot defend the spread offense. They do not have the speed on defense to compete with the PAC-10 or the SEC and the only thing to do is to move on.

I am not saying that Lloyd Carr is a bad coach but he is "old fashioned" and it is simply not working. What they need is a coach with a different mentallity. One of speed and execution. Not a run stopping-8men in the box pass vulnerable "old school" defense.

Last year, despite being the nation's best against the run, Michigan was shredded by Troy Smith and then made to look foolish against USC's high powered "spread em' out" offense. Yes, they were 11-0 before the 2straight losses, but they lost the two that really counted the most.

I just think that it's time Michigan went in a new direction-any direction but the way they are going. Down.
