Costa Rica continue to be one of the surprise sides of the tournament, putting away European power Italy 1-0 to be the first to advance to the knockout stages in a difficult Group D.

Meanwhile, Costa Rica's win eliminates England's faint hopes of a miracle advance to the knockout stages, and sets up a massive clash between Uruguay and Italy for Group D's final spot.

Italy need to only draw against Uruguay to advance, as goal differential is currently in Italy's favour.

Bryan Ruiz gave Costa Rica a not-so-shocking lead, given how well they had been playing, connecting on a long cross to beat Gianluigi Buffon with his head in the 44th minute.
