Japan and Greece played to a scoreless draw on Thursday in Natal, and as a result of the scoreline Group C rivals Colombia progressed into the round of 16.

Half-Time analysis for Japan

Eiji Kawashima: Had to be sharp to save Torosidis’ late effort.

Atsuti Uchida: Did exceptionally well to thwart Samaras on an early counter-attack.

Maya Yoshida: Has so far won all his aerial battles.

Yasuyuki Konno: Distribution out of defense has been excellent.

Yuto Nagatomo: Getting the better of Torosidis.

Makoto Hasebe: Picked up an early booking for a foul on Maniatis.

Hotaru Yamaguchi: Had an early effort blocked in front of goal.

Shinji Okazaki: Final third distribution has been good, although the openings have been few and far between.

Keisuke Honda: Forced Karnezis into a good stop from a free kick in dangerous space.

Yoshito Okubo: Just 17 touches in the first half.

Yuya Osako: Tested Karnezis with one shot and narrowly missed the far corner with another.

Full-Time analysis for Japan

Eiji Kawashima: Made a terrific save on Gekas on the hour-mark.

Atsuti Uchida: Had a good chance to open the scoring; also set up Endo for a late opportunity.

Maya Yoshida: Finished the night with all his aerial battles won.

Yasuyuki Konno: Looked uncomfortable on the rare occasions that the Greek attack arrived at the Japan goalmouth.

Yuto Nagatomo: Couldn’t pick out a cross to save his life.

Makoto Hasebe: Withdrawn in favour of Endo at the interval.

Hotaru Yamaguchi: Nearly 100 touches and a pass-completion rate of 93 percent.

Shinji Okazaki: Committed five fouls and only took a single shot.

Keisuke Honda: Has yet to be the difference-maker his team needs him to be.

Yoshito Okubo: One of Japan’s better attackers in the second half.

Yuya Osako: Tested Karnezis with one shot and narrowly missed the far corner with another.

Yasuhito Endo: Replaced Hasebe at the break and orchestrated much of what Japan mustered offensively in the second half.

Shinji Kagawa: Came on just before the hour-mark and made no impact whatsoever.
