Since defensive back Ricky Nichols was the first player to commit to ODU, he will have the honor of wearing the No. 1 jersey. A.T. Aoelua, a safety transfer from Monterey Peninsula College will give the secondary an athlete with experience to lean on.

Old Dominion will be immediately eligible for an at-large bid into the Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoffs in 2009. The team will play as independent until it joins the Colonial Athletic Association in 2011.

The 11-game schedule will include home games against Virginia Union, Monmouth, Presbyterian, Campbell, Georgetown, and North Carolina. The Monarchs travel to face Jacksonville, Fordham, Savannah State, and VMI.

ODU's first game will be against the Chowan Hawks, a Division II school from Murfreesboro, North Carolina.

For the September 5 home opener, Johnny Brown, a former tailback who is known as the Monarch's best player ever, hopes to run onto Foreman Field during pre-game festivities despite the fact that he is in his '90s now.

Although much should not be expected out of Old Dominion in 2009, any defeat the team may suffer will pale in comparison to the excitement of the return of college football at ODU.
