A picture of Australia midfielder Mark Bresciano tying the shoelaces of a mascot on crutches moments before the World Cup opener against Chile has gone viral.

The 34-year-old has been a fixture of the Australia team for many years, and this is likely to be his final World Cup.

The Socceroos are unlikely to navigate their way out of a group that includes Spain, Netherlands and Chile, but Bresciano's small gesture of kindness may well leave an impression on the tournament.
