Congratulations Donnie on your election to the College Football Hall of Fame. 1987 was a great year to be an Orange fan. It began with the March ride to New Orleans that ended...well...not so well. Come fall Orange fans would enjoy another trip that would eventually lead them back to Bourbon Street.
The '87 footballers gave us quite a trip. Undefeated, exorcising the demons of Penn State and the come from behind thriller vs. West Virginia are all etched in this idiot's too small brain. Week after week the excitement built as the Orangemen closed in on perfection.
In of the great Heisman heists of all time, the Notre Dame Hype Machine managed to push Tim Brown as the frontrunner early in the '87 season. Donnie really never had a shot to overcome that. Add in the "Let's actually vote for Gordie Lockbaum because he plays both ways" sentiment and the end result was Donnie finishing 2nd in the balloting.
(Kill Time At Work Bonus: for some fun, you have to check out some of the names that actually cracked the Top 10 in recent Heisman voting. It's a good read.)
Fortunately, rational members of the college football community honored Donnie in a number of ways that year:
Consensus All-American
Maxwell Player of the Year
Davey O'Brien QB of the Year
Johnny Unitas Award Winnner
1988 Sugar Bowl MVP
Sammy Baugh Trophy Winner
Here's one more honor to a hero from my youth. Congratulations to a class act.
