Waiver-Wire Wonders
OF – Andrew McCutchen – Pittsburgh Pirates – .174 BA, 4 H, 3 R, 1 Double, 0 Triples, 0 HR, 5 RBI, 3 BB, 3 K, 2 SB
Four weeks in a row! This guy must be for real! The trade of Nate McLouth made room for the Pirates to bring up their highly touted prospect and he has started off hot. While he didn’t have his best week this past week, he is starting everyday in center field and has 18 RBI and four stolen bases to go along with a .297 batting average in just 101 at-bats.
He is a bit less available, now being owned in 43.3 percent of ESPN leagues (up 11.6 percent from a week ago). It looks like people are listening to me and picking up on this kid.
SP – John Smoltz – Boston Red Sox – 5 IP, 0 W, 1 L, 5 K, 1 BB, 7 HA, 5 ER
Heee’s baaack! Smoltz made his first start on Thursday against Washington and besides the disaster in the first inning, he wasn’t that bad. He still has the same nasty stuff that he had before going on the DL last year, striking out five and showed good control only walking one.
He could be good for 10 wins, especially with that lineup behind him. He is only owned in 31.1 percent of ESPN leagues (up six percent from last week), so go ahead and grab him and enjoy the wins and strikeouts.
SP – Tommy Hanson – Atlanta Braves – 11.3 IP, 2 W, 6 K, 7 BB, 6 HA, 0 ER
This kid is Gold! He beat both the Red Sox and Yankees this week and hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last 17.3 innings. He is now 4-0 in five starts and has a 2.48 ERA. This kid looks to be for real and is available, only being owned in 39.7 percent of ESPN leagues. Grab him now and watch for him to be your possible keeper for next year.
OF – Scott Podsednik – Chicago White Sox – .286 BA, 8 H, 3 R, 1 Double, 0 Triples, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 SB, 2 CS
Scotty Pods is back in a starting role and is producing like the days of old. He is hitting .314 with 20 RBI and 11 stolen bases for the White Sox. He is only owned in 19 percent of ESPN leagues, so he is available if you need some speed or to add some points to your team batting average.
3B/2B – Casey McGehee – Milwaukee Brewers – .286 BA, 6 H, 3 R, 3 Doubles, 0 Triples, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 1 BB, 4 K
Who’s this kid? McGehee has stepped into a starting role in Milwaukee, either playing second or third base and has been hitting well. He has a .336 batting average with four home runs and 17 RBI in just 107 at-bats. If he keeps hitting this well, he will stay in the lineup. He is owned in 9.5 percent of ESPN leagues, but is going fast as that is up 7.7 percent from last week.
