He will never abandon the flat brim, but for one day Rickie Fowler is changing his signature style in honor of his golf hero, Payne Stewart.
The 25-year-old pro surprised onlookers at the 2014 U.S. Open on Thursday by walking out to tee practice wearing tucked-up knickers and a pair of white and turquoise argyle socks—Stewart’s hallmark style.
Stewart, who died in a tragic plane accident in 1999 at the age of 42, won two U.S. Opens over the course of his career. One of these victories came at Pinehurst (this year’s Open venue). A bronze statue of his famous 1999 fist-pump celebration still stands on the grounds.
He may no longer be with us, but Stewart’s old-school style lives on at Pinehurst. Hopefully Fowler will be able to do it justice.
