It seemed like the treacherous conditions at Pinehurst No. 2 were getting tougher and tougher in the opening round of the U.S. Open.

The rough was challenging and the greens were confounding. But while players like Adam Scott and Bubba Watson could only shake their heads, Martin Kaymer played the course like a master.

Kaymer shot a remarkable five under par 65, and that allowed him to take a three-shot lead a he heads into the second round of the second major of the year.

Kaymer's 65 is the best round ever at Pinehurst No. 2. He was at his best on the back nine, where he shot a four-under 31.

Kevin Na, Graeme McDowell and Brendon De Jonge are in the group that is three back at two under par.
