It's Time for Oakland A's to Get Rid of Jack Cust

With a batting average below the minimum and only two home runs thus far, it is time for the Oakland A's to get rid of Jack Cust.

The A's have acquired Frank Thomas for most of the DH duties and added Rajai Davis for speed and outfield help. Cust is no longer needed.

I hate seeing Cust in the outfield just so he can get at-bats. Never mind that the A's came back and scored eight runs in the fifth inning tonight against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Jack Cust has been a disaster. The error he made in left field tonight was one of the saddest errors I have ever seen. The error proved costly too, as the Angels scored five runs afterward.

The A's have Emil Brown knocking in runs (the way people hoped Cust would), they have Ryan Sweeney, Chris Denorfia, Rajai Davis, and soon Travis Buck will be back. There's absolutely no need for Cust to be out on the field.

I would much rather see Frank Thomas or Mike Sweeney as the DH over Jack Cust any day.

Am I wrong fellow A's fans? Fellow baseball fans? Am I judging the guy too soon in the season?

I don't think I should have to twinge every time I see a fly ball go in his direction...but I do.

You couldn't be more off base.

One, the guy was the A's best hitter, by far, last year. Two, despite playing terrible so far in this short season, he is still second in the AL in OBP. He is also first on the team on OPS, again, playing terrible this year. He is notoriously streaky and is now begun his first hot streak of the year. Maybe he should play a little more DH and a little less OF, but he is the A's best hitter. THe A's would be crazy to drop him now, and, because Billy Beane knows what he is doing, there is no chance they will.

you said he was the A's best hitter... LAST YEAR. And I'll beg to differ with you. Cust had the most homeruns but not the best average, or the most hits. True he has a high OBP, with a lot of walks, and sure that is good, but he is supposedly a power hitter for the A's, and they ARE stacked at DH with Thomas and Sweeney. Both of those hitters are, more reliable, and amazing baseball players. Thomas for one is HOF bound. Not to mention Sweeney has only ONE strikeout all year. Plus I agree with the article, that error last night... that is Little League mistakes. I say send Cust to Sacramento, let him help the River Cats, even though I doubt even they could use his .222 avg, and measly 2 HR from our "biggest power hitter." Sorry Cust, Thomas is back.

yeah matt, cust sucks, notoriously streaky hitters are useless.cosistency is the only way to play baseball and the only way to win. everything he was used for has been replaced by younger and more talented players and theres no need for dead weight on the team.

In baseball, players go through slumps, just ask Alex Rodriguez from the hated Yankees. You can't judge a player like that besides Cust will be back and batting like he was last year. The player the A's should definately get rid of is injury-prone Eric Chavez. The only thing I like about him is when the PA announcer says his name at the coliseum (lol) but come on. They should have never traded off Nick Swisher, but yet they kep Chavez. Billy Beane is almost at bad as the Warriors letting go of Richardon.

thank you finally someone says it. I mean Chavey is a great fielder but he's taking up a lot of money and is like Ray quoted injury prone

After the error in Anaheim, Cust went 4-4. Remember last in season, Jack was in Portland (AAA), the Padres afflitiate, late April and early May. Billy Beane always mention that it always good to have "too many" good players. Even Ryan Sweeney had a problem on Friday with playing the outfield along with Emil Brown, but there is no call for getting rid of him.

Wow...this provided a lot of feedback and controversy. I've discovered I should talk crap about A's players more often and then maybe they will start doing better...but I still wouldn't mind if they got rid of Cust.

Less than two weeks after this horrible article, Cust is first in OBP in the league. I think maybe its time for the bleacherreport should get rid of you, Wes. Don't quit your day job!
