Manchester United and Netherlands striker Robin van Persie was hit by a kitesurfer on the beach, according to a remarkable report in Brazilian newspaper Globo.

The Dutchman was on Ipanema beach after a training session and was knocked down by the kitesurfer as he came down, along with team-mate Daryl Janmaat.

The Daily Mirror, who translated the reports, add that RVP was not seriously hurt, but he did sustain a few injuries in the bizarre tangle:

"Neither was seriously harmed in the collision, with the Dutch federation saying Van Persie had sustained 'light scratches...But apart from that everything is fine.'"

The World Cup begins for the Netherlands on Friday, when they face Spain in a repeat of the 2010 final.
