After looking like he was going to squander a two-set lead, Andy Murray dug deep as darkness descended in Paris, defeating 23rd seed Gael Monfils in five sets before a partisan crowd at the French Open.

Murray won a tight first set with a late break, then walked away easily with the second before Monfils woke up. Suddenly, the big Frenchman was dictating the play, leaving a scampering Murray shattered by the end of the fourth set.

Somehow, as the sun set over Court Philippe Chatrier, it was Murray who found that extra gear. After an early break, he kept the pace fast and furious, barely giving Monfils time to breathe as he finished out the match with seconds to spare before darkness fell.

Murray will advance to the semifinal of the French Open for just the second time in his career. He'll face Rafael Nadal on Friday.
