MLB, AL East, Tampa Bay Rays, Carl Crawford, Matt Garza, Game Recap

Matt Garza got his first win as a Ray behind his sharpest pitching performance in the 2008 season. He struck out 3 through 6 innings.

The Rays scored early when Carlos Pena hit an RBI groundout to score Carl Crawford who walked two batters earlier.

Jonny Gomes then extended the lead with a solo shot to left, his 3rd on the season.

Matt Garza made his one true mistake in the bottom of the 4th as Adam Jones stroked a long 2 run home run to left center field to tie the game.

The big blow for Tampa bay came from the bat of Carl Crawford as he laced a single to center scoring Shawn Riggans and Jason Bartlett.

With a 4-2 lead heading into the 7th, the Rays handed the ball over to trusty set up man Dan Wheeler who has been virtually untouchable this season.  Wheels shut them down in the 7th and 8th. Troy Percival continued his dominance in the ninth as he earned his 6th save of the season.

BJ Upton suffered a strained left shoulder as he fouled a ball off during an at bat.  He is listed as day to day.

The Rays now head into Boston for a weekend series with the beantown boys.  Boston leads the Rays by 0.5 games in the AL east standings.  Boston takes on Toronto tonight at 7:05.

The Rays will send flame thrower Edwin Jackson against young stud Clay Bucholtz for Boston.

The two teams just played last weekend with the Rays sweeping the Sox down in Tampa.
