B.J. Upton was having just another at bat versus Brian Burres when he swung on a 1-1 pitch, fouling it back. The drama, however, was on the follow through.
Upton immediately released the bat sending it to the back stop, yelled in pain while grabbing his left shoulder. The injury was not apparent straight away, but Upton was able to walk off the field and head to the Rays dressing room.
The injury was revealed to be a shoulder strain, and it is not yet known whether he will be placed on the DL or not.

Subbing for him for the rest of his at bat was Nathan Haynes who assumed his position in center field. Haynes remained in the lineup for the rest of the game.
As for longer term replacements there are several options.
Gabe Gross, recently traded from the Brewers plays at both center and right field, but was recently dropped from right field in favour of Eric Hinske. It is possible that he would assume the center field roll, however with his poor hitting average so far it is possible Haynes will remain there for some time to come.
Other possibilities include Jonny Gomes who returned to the lineup versus the Orioles at DH. Putting him in center would allow the smooth return of Cliff Floyd who was hired as a DH.
