An Author's Opinion: 31-Year-Old Tommy Haas Could Be Covering Up Steroid Use

PARIS - JUNE 01: A dejected Tommy Haas of Germany heads towards defeat during the Men's Singles Fourth Round match against Roger Federer of Switzerland on day nine of the French Open at Roland Garros on June 1, 2009 in Paris, France. According to an article on ESPN.com, http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/wimbledon09/news/story?id=4291764, Tommy Haas criticized Wimbledon's policy of a lack of a fifth-set tiebreaker. The 31-year-old German player was upset about play being stopped Friday night, at 6-6 in the fifth set, of his third round match against Marin Cilic. (Haas would eventually prevail after playing six more games on Saturday, taking the fifth set 10-8).

Unfortunately, this article also raises the suspicions, which I already had, on the possible steroid use by Tommy Haas. It was during a fourth round match on June 1st, against Roger Federer, at the French Open, where I got the first telling sign that Haas maybe using steroids.

In this "match-in-question", Haas surprisingly took the first two sets, and was five points away from beating Federer in straight sets. However, Haas "ran out of gas", and lost the final three sets. In fact, the 31-year-old was not even competitive in the fourth and fifth sets of the match.

I don't know about the rest of you reading this, but I thought that the match was "fishy", right from the get-go. At any young age, taking the first two sets against Federer is tough enough to do. At Haas's advanced age of 31, that feat is almost impossible. (That is, of course, without the use of performance enhancing drugs!)

In my opinion, the fact that Haas "ran out of gas", strongly supports the validity of my claim that Tommy Haas may be using steroids. Just like with any medicine/drug, the effects of steroids eventually wears off, as "time" progresses. This may explain why Haas was suddenly not competitive in the final two sets of the match.
