The Western Conference Final was too good to end.
At 2:04 of the second overtime period of Game 5, Michal Handzus flipped a high backhander over Jonathan Quick to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 5-4 win in their playoff series against the Los Angeles Kings, staving off elimination and sending the series back to California for Game 6 on Friday.
After winning the last three games, the Kings came out flat when they had a chance to deliver the final blow to the defending Stanley Cup champions. They allowed the first two goals of the game, but recovered to build a 4-3 lead by the end of the second period.
The 'Hawks answered with a Ben Smith marker in the third, which set up up one of the most fast-paced, exciting playoff overtimes a fan can hope to see.
The first extra frame settled nothing, but Handzus delivered the dagger early in double OT. The Kings' series lead is now narrowed to 3-2. The teams will meet again on Friday at Staples Center.
Final Score: Chicago Blackhawks 5 - Los Angeles Kings 4 (2OT)
Los Angeles leads best-of-seven series 3-2
