Where Are The NFL's New Ideas?

The National Football League has been called a Copy Cat League.

One week a team runs a certain kind of play idea, and the very next week we’ll see that same play being executed by another team.

The days of Tom Landry and Bill Walsh seem to be gone, but are they?

Tom Landry was responsible for the change in the 4/3 defense by creating a true Middle Backer.

Bill Walsh was the first man to design plays that exploited the defensive rules in place. He focused on a short passing game and got every skill position player involved.

There are too many men to name them all, but the sport of football has produced some great minds. Why does it seem these minds have faded at the NFL level? Has every kind of Offensive and Defensive idea already been produced? Or have ideas and the evolution of the sport been subdued by big business and the coaching carousel?

In the college ranks the Boise State coach has definitely found himself a viable Offense. Boise State continues to compete without the benefit of the big name players. Head Coach Chris Peterson is 35-4 entering his 4th season.

The High School level produced a new Offense at Piedmont High School called the A11 only to have the rulebook changed and the Offense banned by the powers that be.

Where are all the new creative minds at the professional level?

Answer, there are very few left.

Why?

Answer, because the men currently in place protect themselves by jumping from team to team, year after year.

This leaves the fans scratching their heads, wondering why their team continues to lose football games.

Here’s a free idea even the Oakland Raiders might be able to execute. Teach both of your guards to snap the football. This would give you an ability to snap with an unbalanced line anytime you wish with a quick shift of your Offensive Line.

But who the hell cares...it’s a new idea....who has time for them?
