Paper Gossip: Fight on for Costa, Chelsea Eye Lavezzi, Remy for Arsenal and More
The focus is shifting toward the World Cup for many players following the conclusion of the season, but the clubs are looking to the transfer window.
There are big deals and bargains to be had, and the papers are awash with gossip.
We have trawled through the papers to bring you the best of the news and rumours.
Chelsea in the Hunt for Lavezzi
Chelsea are considering a bid for Paris Saint-Germain forward Ezequiel Lavezzi, according to Simon Jones of the Mail.
PSG captured David Luiz from Chelsea earlier this month, and Jones claims the Blues asked about the availability of Lavezzi during that negotiation process.
Chelsea are in the hunt for fresh attacking talent, having released Samuel Eto’o, and Diego Costa is also on their list of targets.
Atletico to Fight Hard for Costa
Atletico Madrid are ready to fight hard to keep hold of star striker Diego Costa, according to the Mail’s Pete Jenson.
Costa has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea, but Atletico are ready to keep their big names in a bid to defend their Liga title and push for Champions League glory.
Atletico are still reeling from their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid, but they will not be licking their wounds for long.
Jones quotes Atletico chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin as saying:
We’ll try and make sure that all of the relevant players stay here. We've made a very aggressive approach for Diego to stay and we want to keep this dream going but it all depends on him.
Our intention is not to sell anyone unless the player asks to be sold. Because of our run in the Champions League we have the money to mean we don’t have to sell.
Arsenal and Liverpool on Alert for Remy
Harry Redknapp has opened the door to Liverpool and Arsenal by suggesting Queens Park Rangers will sell Loic Remy in the summer.
QPR are back in the big time after victory over Derby County in the Championship play-off final, but Redknapp does not feel Remy, who spent last season on loan at Newcastle United, will return.
The Mail’s David Kent has the quotes from Redknapp and believes the path is clear for Liverpool and Arsenal to make bids:
I don't see Remy wanting to come back and play. He’s talking about playing Champions League somewhere.
I wouldn't know what he'll do, but I think he's got a buy-out clause which is at a reasonable level.
Lamela on Inter's Radar
Inter Milan could make a raid on Tottenham Hotspur for Erik Lamela, according to the Mail’s David Kent.
The Serie A side have been active players in the market already, and owner Erick Thohir has confirmed the club’s interest in Lamela.
Kent quotes Thohir as saying: “Walter Mazzarri [manager] likes Lamela but everything depends on the transfer market."
Management on the Horizon for Clement
Paul Clement may seize on Real Madrid’s Champions League win by making his own move into management.
Clement has been assistant to Carlo Ancelotti during his spells at Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and now in Madrid.
Clement has admitted it would be tough to leave Madrid, but a move into management is an attractive prospect.
The Star’s Chris McKenna has the quotes: "I think the time for me to be a manager is soon, it will be soon.
"A few opportunities have come my way. But this is a difficult place to leave."
Besiktas Set Their Sights on Ba
Besiktas have set their sights on a summer move for Chelsea forward Demba Ba.
Chelsea are light on attacking options following the release of Samuel Eto’o.
New faces seem certain to be brought in, and Besiktas are waiting in the wings to pounce for Ba.
The Star’s Colin Harvey has the quotes from Besiktas board member Deniz Atalay: "We have been linked with a lot of players but the only player we are interested in right now is Demba Ba."
Blues Eye Mangala to Replace Luiz
Chelsea are ready to fill the void left by David Luiz’s departure to PSG by swooping for Eliaquim Mangala from Porto.
The Blues have £50 million burning a hole in their pockets and Jose Mourinho will make a play for Mangala.
According to the Star’s Chisanga Malata, Mourinho is ready to pay £40 million for the defender.
Drogba Offered Juventus Advice
Didier Drogba has been told to head for Juventus instead of Chelsea.
The forward is out of contract in the summer, and there has been talk of a return to Stamford Bridge.
However, Drogba’s current manager at Galatasaray, Roberto Mancini, feels he would flourish at Juventus.
The Express' Anthony Chapman has picked up quotes from an interview Mancini gave to Tuttosport:
If Juventus were to take Drogba, it would be a great signing.
He'd be an important reinforcement, very useful, particularly in order to have an assault on the Champions League. Drogba can give you a lot from this point of view.
Bits and Pieces: Hammers Close in on Zarate, Ince's Inter Talks and More
West Ham United are set to sign Mauro Zarate from Velez Sarsfield on a three-year deal, according to David Kent of the Mail.
Tom Ince is set to travel to Inter Milan for talks, per a report from Paul Collins of the Mail.
Sunderland are leading the chase for Michael Mancienne, per a report from Darren Witcoop of the Mirror.
