An off-season of transfer speculation for Tottenham Hotspur is already well underway.

The Premier League club spent heavily on seven players heading into last season. Even though that spending spree was enabled by the £85 million received for Gareth Bale from Real Madrid, the north Londoners are unlikely to splash out in the region of £100 million again this summer.

The objective will likely be to recruit in specific areas deemed important to improving the team. Though just where they will be will not become fully apparent until Tottenham appoint a new manager.

There are also certain to be departures from the current playing staff too, with a full to bursting midfield particularly in need of trimming.

For all the latest rumours and news relating to Spurs' transfer activity, make sure to check back here on Bleacher Report every week.

Tottenham could be about to head to Wales in their attempts to bolster their defensive options.

The Daily Mail reports Spurs are interested in signing Swansea City left-back Ben Davies having kept tabs on him throughout last season.

The article believes new manager Mauricio Pochettino views full-back as a position in need of strengthening and that Davies will be suggested to him by the club.

Meanwhile The Mirror's Steve Stammers suggests Cardiff City may look to offload Steven Caulker back to Spurs as they attempt to cut costs following their relegation back to the Championship.

The central defender could also be subject to a bid from Liverpool who are also looking to improve in a position widely viewed as a weak spot during last season's Premier League title challenge.

The latest Lallana to Tottenham rumour comes courtesy of The Mirror's Dave Kidd.

He suggests the north London club will try to tempt Southampton with an offer of cash plus Andros Townsend.

Kidd also notes interest from Queens Park Rangers and Newcastle United in the Spurs winger.

    Wednesday, May 28

Within a day of Mauricio Pochettino's appointment as Tottenham manager, he has already been linked with a move for one of his former Southampton players.

The Guardian's Dominic Fifield reports Spurs want to sign Saints' highly rated skipper Adam Lallana.

The 26-year-old became a regular member of the England squad under Pochettino's guidance and may be tempted to reunite with a manager with whom he flourished.

Speaking to The Independent's Paul Hirst, Lallana—who the writer notes has also been linked with a move to Liverpool—did not rule out the possibility of leaving Southampton before the World Cup.

Via talkSPORT, Italian television station Sky Calcio is reporting a number of Italian clubs are targeting Tottenham attacker Erik Lamela.

Fiorentina, Napoli, Perugia and the Argentinian's former club Roma are all said to be interested.

Despite the speculation about his future, Lamela could still be in the plans of his compatriot and new manager Mauricio Pochettino.

    Friday, May 30

La Liga champions Atletico Madrid could be looking at Tottenham striker Roberto Soldado to replace Diego Costa if he leaves this summer.

The Independent's Simon Johnson claims Soldado would be interested in the move back to Spain after his tough first year in England.

Sales of players such as Soldado could add to what Johnson believes will be a £50 million transfer kitty handed to new manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The article suggests Loic Remy of Queens Park Rangers and Southampton's Jay Rodriguez could be targets for Pochettino as he looks to adds to Spurs' attacking options, and potentially replace Soldado.

    Thursday, May 29

The Times' Rory Smith believes Tottenham are looking to replace technical director Franco Baldini.

Smith notes the Italian was involved in appointing Mauricio Pochettino as new manager, but may be discarded with himself now.

Despite Andre Villas-Boas publicly pushing for the hiring of someone to help with player recruitment, speculation late last year suggested he differences of opinion with Baldini over certain players.

Tim Sherwood also appeared to have different ideas to the technical director about the direction the playing staff should move in.

The nature of Baldini's role as it applies to working with Pochettino has not been made clear. If The Times article is right, they might not get a chance to work together.

Spurs Targeting Forster in the Event of Lloris Sale?

    Thursday, May 29

The Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel reports Tottenham would look to sign Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster if Hugo Lloris declares his intention to leave the north London club.

Currently preparing for the World Cup with England, Forster has notably impressed with the Scottish champions in Europe in recent seasons.

His own status in Glasgow does not appear to have changed with the departure of manager Neil Lennon. The former Newcastle United shot-stopper could, though, welcome the change to test himself in the Premier League having failed to previously get a chance in the north-east.

With Lloris on international duty too, the future of both goalkeepers is unlikely to be decided until July at the earliest (if it is even necessary).

Redknapp Looking to Reunite with Dawson and Townsend?

    Thursday, May 29

Unsurprisingly, former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is being linked with some of his old players now he is back in the Premier League with freshly promoted Queens Park Rangers.

The Daily Express' Tony Banks reports Redknapp wants to sign defender Michael Dawson and winger Andros Townsend.

The latter enjoyed a reputation-enhancing loan spell with QPR in 2012-13, playing well despite them being relegated.

Dawson was said to have turned down a move to Loftus Road in 2012 and quickly regained his first-team place in the Tottenham first-team.

Both the Spurs skipper and Townsend signed new contracts at White Hart Lane last year. Dawson will have been at the club 10 years next January, and having previously stayed to fight for his place, would likely do so again if needs be.

Townsend may be more tempted into a move if first-team football is not forthcoming under Mauricio Pochettino. We are unlikely to find out the status of most of the Spurs squad until pre-season, regardless.

    Wednesday, May 28

Metro believes Roma striker Mattia Destro is interesting Mauricio Pocchetino as the Argentinian begins the task of shaping his Tottenham squad.

According to the report, the Italy international would cost around £14 million.

The Premier League side bought Erik Lamela from the Serie A club last summer. The move was undoubtedly aided by Spurs technical director Franco Baldini being previously employed by Roma.

Whether the Giallorossi would consider selling the 23-year-old, who scored 13 times last season, is unclear. Going by quotes from his agent on Asradioroma.it—here via Sky Sports—the player, at least, is not looking to leave.

Elsewhere the Daily Express' Jamie Anderson has linked Spurs with a move for Napoli's Swiss midfielder Valon Behrami. While according to Gazzetta dello Sport—via Football Italia—the Neapolitans are considering bidding for current Spurs player Sandro.

Are Spurs and Arsenal Both Interested in Cardiff Keeper Marshall?

    Tuesday, May 27

The Daily Telegraph's Matt Law reports Arsenal are targeting Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall.

Law notes there has been some rumoured interest from Tottenham in Marshall in the unlikely event of Hugo Lloris leaving.

The Scotsman's good performances ensured the Bluebirds were not relegated from the Premier League before they actually were.

He would make an excellent back-up for Lloris at Spurs, but is too good to accept a bit-part role. If the interest from Arsenal is genuine, Marshall might, though, fancy the challenge of displacing their current first-choice, the erratic Wojciech Szczesny.

Elsewhere, the Daily Star's Jamie Anderson suggests the north London rivals could be about to battle it out for Sporting Lisbon's England youth international defender Eric Dier.

    Tuesday, May 27

Tottenham are preparing a bid for Standard Liege striker Michy Batshuayi, according to the Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel.

The bid for 20-year-old, who has represented Belgium at under-21 level, is said to be subject to the approval of Mauricio Pochettino, the Southampton boss who Mokbel notes is widely believed to be about to be appointed Spurs manager.

Crystal Palace Targeting Dawson and Sigurdsson?

11 of 14

Will Crystal Palace bid for Michael Dawson and Gylfi Sigurdsson?

    Monday, May 26

The Daily Star's Jamie Anderson reports Michael Dawson and Gylfi Sigurdsson are at the top of Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis' list of transfer targets.

Anderson writes that they are "considered a top priority" by the Eagles as they prepare to cement their Premier League status.

Sigurdsson's status is among the most intriguing in the current Tottenham squad. The Iceland international has intermittently impressed but has found a regular starting place hard to hold down in a crowded midfield.

Spurs will not be in a hurry to sell him but may be tempted by the chance to recoup at least some of the £8 million spent on him, in the process trimming their numbers.

As Anderson noted, Dawson signed a new contract last season. His mentioning of previous interest from other clubs in the centre-back as a reason for a possible departure is tenuous given the 30-year-old's previous willingness to fight for his place at Spurs.

As with so many players at White Hart Lane right now, things could soon change depending on the wishes of the new manager.

Hull Ready to Make Livermore Move Permanent?

    Monday, May 26

The Hull Daily Mail believes Hull City will look to begin negotiations with Tottenham and Jake Livermore about the midfielder's permanent transfer this week.

Livermore spent last season on loan with Hull, helping the newly promoted club retain their Premier League status and reach the FA Cup final.

Signing the 24-year-old is said to be a priority for Tigers boss Steve Bruce. Livermore's price could prove to be a sticking point, however, with the two clubs some way apart in his valuation, according to the Mail.

Inter Milan Want Lamela

    Monday, May 26

Internazionale president Erick Thohir has confirmed his club's interest in Tottenham attacker Erik Lamela.

In an article by the Daily Mail's David Kent, Thohir said Inter Milan manager "Walter Mazzarri likes Lamela, but everything depends on the transfer market."

Kent quotes Thohir as saying Inter's intention is to lower the average age of their squad, something the 22-year-old Argentinian would certainly help with.

Despite a tough first year in England, it would be surprising to see Spurs give up just yet on a player they spent upwards of £25 million on.

The regret of missing out on Lamela fulfilling his talent with them is a risk they would be foolish to take at this stage.

Wigan Want Pritchard on Loan?

    Monday, May 26

The Daily Mirror's Alan Nixon reports Tottenham's young midfielder Alex Pritchard is attracting interest from Wigan Athletic over a possible loan move.

The 21-year-old spent last season with Swindon Town before coming on to make his first senior Spurs appearance in the final-day win over Aston Villa.

Although highly rated in north London, Pritchard may find first-team football hard to come by for a while yet. Another season out on loan with Championship-side Wigan could be the best bet for his development and the logical step up after a year in League One with Swindon.
