UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw Round-by-Round Recap and Analysis

    TJ Dillashaw entered as a big underdog at UFC 173, and he proved all his doubters wrong.

    For four-plus rounds Dillashaw dominated Renan Barao en route to becoming the UFC bantamweight champion.

    Dillashaw utilized speed, footwork, head movement and an unrelenting pace to outclass the champion in each round. Barao had no answer. It was an excellent performance that earns Team Alpha Male a UFC championship.

Round 1

    And we're off.

    Dillashaw circles on the outside. Barao trying to cut him off. Huge Brazilian contingent in the crowd as always in Vegas.

    A lot of errant strikes early from both men. They are testing the waters, and trying to gauge the distance. A lot of feints from Dillashaw. He wants to make Barao react and then counter. Good uppercut from Dillashaw.

    Barao is very controlled. Dillashaw lands again. Is an upset brewing?

    Barao counters with a right hand. The speed of Dillashaw is coming into play early. Barao is staying composed, and he is seeking his opportunity to strike. Barao wants to manage the distance. Dillashaw drops Barao with a huge shot! He's trying to finish!

    Barao goes for a leg, but Dillashaw is all over him! Barao is surviving, but just barely. He's up as the round ends!

    Barao is back out into the center of the cage.

    The champion is starting to get loose. Dillashaw starts to come forward a bit more at the beginning of the second. Dillashaw goes for the winging overhand right, but it misses. Dillashaw possesses a lot of power, and a lot of it has to do with the speed of his hands.

    The speed is giving Barao fits.

    Dillashaw avoids the spinning back kick easily. Dillashaw shoots in, but Barao defends. Barao lands an inside leg kick, but it hits Dillashaw in the nether regions. There'll be a brief stoppage to allow Dillashaw time to recover, and that could benefit Barao as well.

    They are exchanging, but not landing. Dillashaw lands a right hand. And another. Barao throws a combination, but Dillashaw covers up well. Dillashaw starts to go to the body. Dillashaw is taking it to Barao.

    U-S-A chants at the beginning of the third round.

    Dillashaw pressing Barao. He wants to turn the pace up even more and force Barao to work. Dillashaw throws a high kick, but it barely misses. Barao lands a nice low leg kick. Barao does not look sharp on his feet, but that could be due to Dillashaw's movement.

    Dillashaw lands, Barao answers and Dillashaw lands again. Inside leg kick from Dillashaw.

    Barao throwing more leg kicks, but they are not landing flush. Dillashaw throwing combination after combination. His workrate tonight has been exceptional. He has Barao guessing way too much. Total confusion for the Brazilian.

    Barao looks to referee Herb Dean regarding a potential eye poke, and Dillashaw nails him.

    Dillashaw grabs a leg, but abandons the shot quickly.

    Dillashaw still bouncing around light on his feet. The champion stands in the center of the Octagon, but there is not a sense of urgency. Meanwhile, Dillashaw continues to outpace him.

    Barao is wild in his attempts to counter Dillashaw's combinations. Barao tries another spinning back kick, but it hits air. Dillashaw continues to touch him up. Speed and movement have been the keys. Barao has no idea where Dillashaw is coming from.

    Dillashaw presses Barao up against the fence. They separate. Barao tries another spinning back kick, trips and Dillashaw follows him on the ground. Barao goes for the leg, but Dillashaw pulls out quickly. Barao is not going to be able to submit him from the bottom at this point.

    Another round for the challenger.

    They touch gloves at the start of the fifth.

    Barao starts the fifth the same as the previous four. He takes the center of the cage, but has no sense of urgency to retain his title. He is simply letting Dillashaw outwork him tonight.

    Barao misses the spinning back kick again, and Dillashaw comes forward with a knee. Punches, kick, high, low - Dillashaw is attacking everywhere. Three minutes until we crown a new champion.

    Dillashaw hurts Barao with a huge combination, and he follows up! Big ground and pound! We have a new UFC champion! What a performance! Complete domination over Barao!
