How Will Twitter Impact The NFL?

Ghandi once said, "The future depends on what we do in the present."

Wise words from a brilliant man.

In today's NFL, players are now interacting with their fans via twitter, an on-line service which sends out tweets, or pieces of information simultaneously to anyone who follows or subscribes.

Will this have an affect on the National Football League?

In a media driven world stories are constantly written about athletes, information is taken out of context, and the fan never really gets the other side of the athletes story.  Not only does the media control the level of questioning, but they also have control over the editing of the story as well as which direction they want their motivated intention to go.

With Twitter, athletes can willingly discuss whatever is on their mind.  They can do it in the comfort of their own home, and we are invited to hear not such the emotional response we're used to hearing following a contest where emotions run high.

The NFL Network reports daily about updates which come from NFL players.

Recently we heard Terrell Owens was responding to a fan on his Twitter site.  The fan said he was mad about Owens’ departure from Dallas.  Owens responded that the blame should go to quarterback Tony Romo and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.

Just yesterday Tennessee Titan Running Back Chris Johnson reported that he no longer wants to be known as associated with the nickname, Smash and Dash.

Where do you feel this is headed?

Will this type of communication have any sort of affect on the NFL?

In my opinion it will create a big change.  In a sport full of greed and lack of loyalty, a web service such as this is a playground for the kind of behavior needed to fuel the ego driven masses inside and outside the NFL.

Click here for a list of current and former NFL players currently using the service.

In time, the majority of players will probably also join in, as on-line communication and the syncronicity of people spirals into a worldwide need to tell others "where I am" and "what I'm doing" and "how I feel about it".

On a side note, there are currently no Oakland Raiders on Twitter that I am aware of......but Al Davis can bet his lunch money there will be.
