The fast-paced fury of group qualifying produced plenty of thrills in the chase for the Coca-Cola 600 pole.
After the third session, which latest just five minutes, Jimmie Johnson earned the pole with a time of 27.705 on his first lap.
Danica Patrick, who finished on top of the second qualifying session, ended up in fourth place with a lap time of 27.931.
In between those two on the starting grid will be Brad Keselowski and Kasey Kahne, both of whom delivered under-28-second laps in the round that mattered most.
Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin will start on the third row for Sunday night's race at Charlotte Motor Speedway after ending up in the middle of the pack of 12 during the final session.
Of the 45 drivers who participated in qualifying, J.J. Yeley and Dave Blaney are the only two drivers who will go home after Thursday's racing.
