When a pro athlete "retires," it rarely resembles the retirement of the average working man or woman. That’s assuming if the average person is able to retire at all.
Retirement for most Americans is, for all practical purposes, the on-ramp for the highway to Deadtown. You’re old, and you want to spend those golden years doing anything other than sitting at a desk or whatever it is that you spent most of your life doing to pay the bills.
For athletes, retirement is that stage of life that begins once their unique physical gifts can no longer earn them a paycheck alone—or when a tendon or bone abruptly decides it’s time to call it quits.
And while the retirement age as defined by the Social Security Administration is 67, when none of us are exactly at our best, most athletes retire well before the age of 40. So, life post-retirement for men and women who were most likely already in peak physical condition is not too shabby.
Rather than staying in shape just to punish their bodies, many are doing it for an endorsement deal or fashion spread. In short, a fair number of "retired" athletes manage to look even better after hanging it up.
