We are all used to seeing the work of professional sports photographers who crouch on the sidelines with their long lenses. Major newspapers and discerning websites such as this one publish them every day.

While most photographers stick to generic conventions to tell the story of the game, Ryu Voelkel does things a little differently.

"I show the moments between the highlights," he says. "I focus on the details, like patterns, movements and capturing the atmosphere in the stadium."

Here follows a selection of Voelkel's work, taking an artistic look at English top-flight clubs competing in the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.
