After today's (4/30/08) horrifying start, Mets fans should start wondering, "Was he worth Xavier Nady?"

The answer to that is, no.

I mean, he was a 15-game winner last year along with John Maine, and it's only one start, but I mean, come on. Every pitch he threw was one that an elementary school travel-team kid could hit out of Minute Maid Park.

He only went 1.2 innings in today's start, and was charged with SEVEN runs. Now, back to Xavier Nady.

As soon as the Mets dealt him in 2006, Nady caught fire (.300 avg and 20 HR). On the other hand, when Perez arrived he, took some time in order to achieve a quality start.

Another thing that really pissed me off personally, was when Roberto Hernandez (acquired along with Perez) was released at the end of the season. If Omar had any brains, he would have brought him back along with Chad Bradford, who just so happened to be a staple in the bullpen in 2006.

A part of this deal that nobody understands is when Omar traded Nady, whether or not he was planning for 2007 in any way, because as soon as Nady was traded, the Mets had prospects playing right field, and then they got Shawn Green, who also was inconsistent.

Now, there is one trade possibility open; Nady for Perez and Heilman to the Pirates, who desperately need pitching help.

  1. I'm sure Pirates G.M. Neal Huntington is wise enough not accept struggling pitchers for a solid batter who, on a better team, would probably garner far better numbers. Many Mets fans will pine over losing Nady but forget that while he was on fire early in the 2006 season he couldn't sustain that tear following his appendectomy and was not at all strong in the clutch in his return. He was simply the odd man out at a time when the Mets needed trade bait desperately.

Roberto Hernandez was more or less a rental to shore up the bullpen after the Sanchez injury. There was never a need for his services beyond that; in hindsight the roid-induced Guillermo Mota served dutifully making Hernandez-Nady trade unnecessary.

Perez, like John Maine (from Baltimore) was a mere throw-in (Benson for Julio) and the Mets have benefited greatly by having them in the rotation. Two acquisitions that were hardly the genius work of Omar Minaya but sheer luck to have gotten so much from these two outcasts while the key players involved turned out to be busts.

Unlike Maine, we're finding that Perez emotional state is possibly his own worst enemy. He's got the talent but he's only as good as he is confident. When he's hot, he's hot and when he's not, he looks like he did today.

One final note about Minaya, much to the dismay of Chad Bradford he claimed the Mets never even called his agent after the 2006 season to negotiate an extension. Darren Oliver was also brushed off without explanation while Mota, already found guilty of using steroids and facing a major suspension in 2007 was rewarded with a lucrative two-year deal.
