If the BCS Ruled the World: Why We Need a Playoff System
The BCS is here to stay. CBS and numerous other sites are reporting that BCS Presidents have rejected the Mountain West Conference eight team playoff plan.
Not too surprising news.
The BCS looks to be cemented into the college football landscape for years to come. The longer it stays, the less likely of a playoff coming down the NCAA pipes.
But is the BCS really the best thing for sports? Let's look at what the BCS would do as opposed to what happened in other major sports.
NFL Super Bowl: Arizona vs. Pittsburgh
Remember this image of Larry Fitzgerald running toward what was going to be the Cardinals first championship?
We'll don't hold onto it if the BCS was in charge. Actually, take out the Steelers too. They were not the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
The BCS Super Bowl picks the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans to play in its Super Bowl. Strange how neither team won a playoff game that year.
Who Needs the Playoffs? The NFL does.
BCS: 0
Playoffs: 1
MLB World Series: Philadelphia vs. Tampa Bay
Cole Hamels and the Phillies won the World Series against a very young Tampa Bay Rays squad.
Tampa Bay was a team that no one thought was legitimate, even when the won the AL East.
But sorry Phillies and Rays fans, you guys didn't qualify for the BCS Championship. Those spots went to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Chicago Cubs.
The Angels (100-62) and Cubs (97-64) both did not win a playoff series last year.
The Cubs and World Series don't go well together.
BCS: 0
Playoffs: 2
NBA Finals: Orlando vs. Los Angeles
It was supposed to be Kobe vs. Lebron. 24 vs. 23. The Black Mamba vs. King James.
Except nobody told Orlando. The Magic beat the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals easily.
The Lakers held up their part of the bargain.
As usual, the BCS system misses who deserved to play in the finals.
BCS: 0
Playoffs: 3
NHL Stanley Cup Finals: Pittsburgh vs. Detroit
A BCS formula gives the Stanley Cup an East Coast vs. West Coast feel, as the Boston Bruins were to take on the San Jose Sharks.
The Sharks actually lost to the No. 8 seed Anaheim Ducks in the first round.
The Bruins made it a little further, falling to Carolina in the second round.
The real Stanley Cup Finals had a No. 2 seed (Detroit) and a No. 4 seed (Pittsburgh) square off in one of the most-watched finals series in over 30 years.
BCS: 0
Playoffs: 4
NCAA Basketball: North Carolina vs. Michigan St.
This is where sports get a little tougher.
Do I pick the AP polls, which would have Louisville vs. North Carolina?
Or should I pick the ESPN/USA Today poll, putting Louisville vs. Memphis?
Either way, North Carolina against Michigan State, the real title game, was not picked by any system.
BCS:0
Playoffs:5
NCAA Women's Basketball: Connecticut vs. Louisville
The NCAA championship, according to the BCS ,would be the Stanford Cardinal and UConn Huskies.
The real championship was the Big East battle between UConn and Louisville.
Sure, the Huskies won and went undefeated, but the BCS left out Louisville, which is unacceptable.
BCS:0
Playoffs: 6
NASCAR Chase for the Cup: Jimmie Johnson
Jimmie Johnson won the 2008 Sprint for the Cup. Luckily for NASCAR fans, they have a playoff.
Johnson was in third place, behind Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards, when the chase began.
The BCS formula left out the champion of NASCAR.
BCS: 0
Playoffs: 7
NCAA Baseball: LSU Tigers vs. Texas Longhorns
LSU just got done beating Texas in a great College World Series. The Tigers came back in Game 1 and dominated Game 3.
The Tigers, according to Baseball America, should have played UC-Irvine, who didn't even make the College World Series.
BCS loses again.
BCS: 0
Playoffs: 8
NCAA Women's Softball: Florida vs. Washington
The BCS Gods would have enjoyed a softball Women's COllege World Series of Florida and UCLA.
Problem is that the Washington Huskies made the finals and won.
UCLA didn't even make it past Missouri in the Super Regional.
Florida held up their part, making it to the championship game.
Florida was ranked No. 1, and Washington ranked No. 4
BCS: 0
Playoffs: 9
NCAA FCS Championship: Richmond vs. Montana
The Richmond Spiders took on the Montana Grizzlies for the FCS championship.
If the BCS made the call, it would have been the Appalachian State Mountaineers and James Madison Dukes.
Richmond the seventh-ranked team, and Montana, the No. 5 team, beat the BCS again.
BCS: 0
Playoffs: 10
Final Thoughts
The BCS doesn't need to be making the picks for national champion.
The history of sports have shown us that the BCS formula, when challenged against a playoff, have yet to yield the same results.
Sure, two No. 1s have played each other in a championship after a playoff.
But the fact is that throughout the years in sports, the playoffs yield true champions. You cannot complain of the results if every team is given a chance.
A playoff allows for everybody to have a chance. I am not here to propose a playoff, but to simply say it's time for a change.
After all, every NCAA sport has a playoff except for college football's top level.
Why not get with the program BCS?
